I dont know if it has been mentioned before, but i really liked how the historical/semi historical army names added spice for games like eu 2 and hoi II

names like Lions of "Kart Hadast" or any other semi historical and plausible names should be added, instead of the "1st army" "2nd army" etc.

You could always change them anyway. But I agree that it's good idea for a lazy day :p

well for the romans you wouldn't have much to do except number the legions, although i guess you could give them cognomens like "valeria victrix" or what have you...

well, but i just feels wrong if a Cimbrian raiding party crushes northern provinces under the notorius name of "1st army" LAwl

The problem is that most of the time didn't have names. Armies could use names of tribes/historical leaders.. Otherwise it would require some imagination.

I strongly advice historical-plausible names. Carthagininan 'Sicilian Army' and 'African Army' won't be out of place ;)

I agree with Keraunos, try and use plausible names. I usually go the geographical route, naming armies after the area they are based. This can be a problem if like me in EU3, you transfer the Saxon corps to Naxos to fight the Ottomans. I do like to think that the regional identity is kept though.

Like the Great Portuguese "Brazilian Fleet" defeating an Indian Minor near India in EU2?

It seems that every legion also did have a proper name besides their number. But im not sure that those are known for all of them. And of course then theres all the other nations where often a lot less is known about their military units.

Well, we're talking about starting names, that you can always change. Now you can name an army, but in the begining it's always "1st Army" etc. In EU2 it was even more annoying with ENG army names. Who kept an army in Wales, Ireland, and Scotland? :p But "Royal Grenadiers", "British Exped. Force" or "KGL" are just cool ;)

I did :eek:o
(you never know when those sneeky bastards might try to break the union ;))

In fact when playing france or england I usually spent a lot of time to make sure every army had the right name and the right positioning :p

In EU3 i just renamed the army after what general area it was in (although i at some points have tabbed out of the game to find an appropriate name in the language of my current nation :p)

But from my point of view, the ability to name them yourself is definately superior to the ready-named armies, although a combo never hurts

yeah i went for the combo as well,

my point is that if u for instance play as Denmark and u raise an army, which is automatically called "Copenhagen defenders"
instead of "Københavnske livgarde" it is sad, i think that the armies should automatically receive a plausible NATIVE name of course this takes a lot of time to code and such, but it really adds to the charm of the game

also i dont know if im emo or something but i i compare EU II and EUIII i almost start crying, EUII is just so beutifull in its ugliness(music) but still a epic game (game play and game mechanics+lovely 2d map)

EUIII really dissapoited me, it lacked atmosphere, im a real sucker for historical events, and i really appreciate what the Magna Mundi team improved. but it is still not "historical" enough for me, it seems that Paradox goes pop, like they are more concerned of graphics than gameplay and new stuff.

please Pox, dont turn EA that would be awfull..

sorry if i offended anyone

Maybe you'd like entire interface to be latin as well when you play Rome? :p
I'd really support idea of combo mentioned in this topic, but English names would do enought, I think ;) Remember EU:R is in beta stage, and developing native names mean lot of work...

BTW, are EU3 army names moddable (I mean starting list)? If not, even such file would do, as it's not difficult to develop such mod.

Flooper X, I kept armies in Wales and Scotland, too. But they had only 1,000 each, so main reason of their existance was to take away those horrible and not really need names ;)

sorry if i offended anyone

Not offended but I can see where PI is coming from.

It seems that PI decided to go for historic plausibility and allowed the player to take each country in the direction they want rather than straight jacket them with what actually happened(good and bad) to that country at that point in time.

What if Gustavus Adolphus isn't even present at the Battle of Lützen in November 1632 or isn't in battle anywhere for that matter? Should the Swedish King die just b/c he did in real life? Another interesting question is what would Europe look like today if he had lived a full life and eventually sired a legitimate male heir?

Another interesting example, playing the new expansion that is set to come out for EU3, is to start the game the day that Henry IV was named the Heir of France(this will probably be modeled as a personal union) and see what would have happened in Europe if Henry V didn't die before his son came of age.

However I do hope that they tie QFTNW to a specific Naval and Production tech lvl so as to prevent people from starting colonization ridiculously early. Then again the Vikings managed to reach the Americas way before this expansion is set to begin...

Back to EU:Rome why should Carthage, Egypt, or the Seleucid Empires fall on their historic day? Rome may actually not be doing so good in the game you are playing.

I do see what the addition of Providence Specific army names would bring to the game in the form of atmosphere but its way to much time for the development team to implement. Its great that these games are so easy to mod though.

Sorry for the long post...

Sorry for the acronyms:

PI:paradox Interactive
NI:National Idea(They are present in EU:Rome in a similar fashion)
QFTNW: Quest for the New World

Simply put QFTNW lets you explore unknown providences in EU3

As for the OT forum, as far as I know you should be able to post once you have created an account.
