A bit of trivia:
A hindu successor state to Madurai did exist in 1399. The old Pandya state (the kingdom of Madurai) preceding the Madurai Sultanate was never fully annexed by the Sultanate and therefore weren't annexed initially by Vijayanagar either. The Pandyas didn't control Madurai itself anymore but they did still hold territory south of it (around Tirunelveli) as the game starts. They would stick around until the late 1470's when they were at last extinguished by Vijayanagar after trying to reclaim their old capital.
