So I just hired a raid against an empire I'm at war with, and of all the possible targets, the raiders attack the only system I'm currently occupying, destroying my fleet, occupied starbase and occupying army. Is this working as intended? I have just paid 3k credits to lose myself a war. Whenever I try to get back to playing stellaris some weird stuff like this happens that make me quit... sigh...

That is just classic. The defender does own the system until he gives it away in a peace settlement, so technically it is a legitimate target. "You conquered thjat system? Oh we hadn't heard."

Well, with a little bit of imagination and good will there's always a way to justify a design flaw. But the truth is it doesn't make any sense. Strange that people seem to think it's alright.

I saw this thread title and thought "I wonder if this is going to be due to the target planet being occupied" and yep.
I hope this turns out to be a bug and isn't WAI.

Two possibilities:
1st the marauders go after a planet of your choice (maybe for an extra fee)
2nd when you hire the marauders, they check for planets that the target own both legally and currently and they tell you were they are going.

Yeah, found this out the hard way myself as well. They are hostile to anyone who owns the planet. So that means if you get partial ownership via occupation, all their fleets suddenly turn hostile to you and they wreck you. And they don't care whether or not it's occupied when you hire them either.

Mauraders are a real pain to use in war. Your safest bet is to just throw them at someone to weaken them or kill off a bastion, and then DOW them when you get the alert that they are done pillaging.
