Is it just me or are the Muslims total pushovers in HIP?

Could you be a bit more specific? Are you using the latest version of HIP? (This is not the thread for the most recent patch) Is it with SWMH enabled? From which starts are they pushovers? Which realms seem to be collapsing more than others? Or is it across the board

Muslims are a bit weak for some reason, yes. Decadence is a bit harsh right now, which will be relieved in the upcoming release. However, this definitely doesn't explain the Muslim religious authority problems.

This is what Ziji had to say on the subject earlier this month. We have released a patch since then.

EMF also still has some old code from PB that's been on my shit-list for at least a solid year that preemptively (as in, before total conquest of the duchies) expands the de jure territory of Portugal, Leon, Castille, and Aragon on SWMH as certain counties come under control of the Christians. I didn't write this code and have promised @IoannesBarbarus ( whom thankfully keeps reminding me that it needs to be addressed-- every week, every day, every hour, every other minute  ) that I'd replace it with something that makes a lot more sense.

The problem with the current code is that it basically makes a *bunch* of Muslim-held territory suddenly de jure Portugal / Leon / Castille / Aragon (without properly earning it first). This means that the Christians will inevitably use de jure county claims (or, worse in this case, de jure duchy, as they don't seem to have much trouble hitting Medium CA on those kingdoms) to very rapidly *vassalize* those Muslims (whom they then proceed to Demand Religious Conversion and/or eventually revoke all their titles, but it's nasty in the interim) INSTEAD of being forced to use a Holy War CB to properly remove kebab and THEN potentially add to their de jure territory. This makes the Reconquista happen far too early, far too inaccurately in manner, and far too often successfully-- with a lot of overextension.

My fix will be sane de jure expansion (only expand the kingdoms de jure when the territory in question has already been outright conquered completely) combined with a Reconquista CB (a variant of Holy War) that doesn't require piety / requires less of it (tuned as necessary) and can be used by both the Christians and Muslims over the contested "Reconquista duchies" in Iberia. The special CB will only be necessary if the Christians can't seem to pull-off the Reconquista with this aforementioned, inaccurate kludge removed/fixed and standard Holy War, which is admittedly a tad piety-expensive for an AI that doesn't know good ways to earn piety like players do.

And this is what Ziji had to say earlier this month too about the same subject, but confined to Muslim resistance to the Christian AI reconquista in Spain

Hi Ziji, could this be adjusted that this CB would be somehow locked for at least a year or 2 since the start of the game?
I'm not sure if anything like this is codable, but if yes, it would really be helpfull. Even after this adjustment the nomads are still way too easy target for their settled neighbours.

Yes, it'd be very easy to implement that. I'll give it some thought later, as it seems like maybe _all_ CBs should not be used by the AI for the first year or two of a campaign, actually, so I might make that into a more general thing.

Is it just me or are the Muslims total pushovers in HIP?

Depends on a lot of variables. I'm still not quite happy with their weakness, but I'm trying to alleviate that gradually with each of the last few releases until they're at just the right threat level. I don't fully-understand all the sources of their weakness, after all; most mods/vanilla have the opposite problem, and in EMF, they used to be much stronger, but patches have happened in the interim, and well, things change. However, at this point, the Seljuks and such are doing pretty damn well compared to a couple months ago.

While I haven't been watching the Muslims in the Middle East area, I've been watching them in Iberia though. Castilie and Leon are down to only a half dozen counties each.

Yeah, Iberia is a fucked situ for Islam, and @theKing1988 already quoted me on a big reason as to why that will change.

I'm still seeing the Islamic world going into a Death Spiral when they lose Jerusalem.

Please elaborate upon what a "Death Spiral" is. Religious authority? Rampant heresy? Or, um, just realm instability?

Heresies start springing up, large portions of the the world turn Yazidi (which really really shouldn't be a Sunni heresy, I'm almost tempted to learn to mod CKII so I can make a religion module for ya'll.) or Zikri. Causing mass instability, which weakens the Muslim world to further Christian invasion, which leads to lower MA.

Oh and the Fatimids and Rum really need a buff. The Fatimids tend to get their poop pushed in by a Crusade way too easily, and Rum just isn't a threat to the Byzantines right now. The Seljuk Turks seem to hold together as often as they fall apart, but I do wish they were more aggressive about Westward expansion.

I support this. In many games now I've seen the sunni practically vanish from the map. North Africa is usually a mix of zikri, yazidi and ibadi. Fatimids obviously stay Shia, but usually break down to a million warring pieces constantly. In the latest game I'm playing even the Selcuk empire (after breaking apart, but surprisingly managign to pull itself together once again) has gone yazidi, and has done a holy war to Armenia, a yazidi holy war that is.

While in many ways this is incredibly awesome, it's a bit not-funny regarding the mod's goals.

Did you not see all the changelog items from Friday re: boosting Muslim RA? Might that affect your comment?

Well about Rum, i think you've got the issue backwards. The problem isn't as much that they aren't a threat to the Empire. It is that they are not able to resist it well enough. Rum was never close to overrunning the Empire except for during the 15 year period between 1071 and 1086. After that the Rum Sultans had way more problems keeping their Emirs in line and instituting their authority throughout Anatolia to be able to wage or even care about all-out war against the Empire. They continued to have limited war-goals (like the recapture and demolition of the forts at Dorylaion and Sublaion) after the victory at Myriokephalon in 1176, but they never steamrolled the Empire again after 1086. They were however constantly on-par with the Imperial army, power-wise.

Still, Rum was a persistent thorn in the side of the Byzantine until its collapse due to the Ilkhanate. They should be capable of at least holding the Romans off and trading frontier territory with them. Right now, as soon as the Byzantines have enough piety they start warring Rum into a rump state.
