I was under the impression HIP had a combat system based off of http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?670595 .

Is this no longer the case?

I think you might be confusing us with CK2+, as we've never had Better Armies integrated in any way.

I believe Project Balance has it's own, well, balanced units. I don't think having that many buildings ever was the case, nor promised, but on a slightly related note the duel engine doesn't work for me this version.

What do you mean by doesn't work? There's an issue (which seems to be a vanilla problem) right now where liege levies aren't getting automatically assigned commanders, so it's become rather rare to actually see a duel happen. Any other issues are part of the Duel Engine and, well, we're working on addressing those.

Thanks for the response, I think I was confusing your two mods (although of course HIP is much better than CK2+ nowadays.) Is better armies combat portion only a compatible mod, this is really the main thing I miss.

I'm still getting duel events. Most of the enemy computer-controlled armies I meet have commanders on all 3 wings.

Whenever a duel initiates without the enemy running, i get no events afterwards. No duel, nothing.

Just had one fire today. That's the first one over the course of this version of the game, where i've played in total for about 200 years ingame. I can't see what causes them to fire sometimes and sometimes not work at all. It was a glorious duel for the Kingdom of France between the feeble french king and the "king" of spain(me).

Rumor has it that there's renewed development on duels / mortal combat sequence flavor & fun going-on deep within the confines of HIP's secret laboratories. Duels are probably never going to be something that happens every other battle like they used to (before a Paradox patch apparently bugged liege levy commander assignment and almost completely ruined the odds of the right characters being at the right place at the right time for a battlefield duel to occur), but if my sources are correct and this so-top-secret-I-may-now-have-to-kill-you HIP development works-out as planned, it will be a Very Good Thing and quite an improvement upon what fans of the duel engine have come to expect even in the best of cases (and probably in many more places).

I've taken the combat system from Better armies and gotten rid of everything else in order to make it compatible with HIP. I also fixed a few CTDs, and the localization files, and ahhheygao fixed the sprite files (so now the sprites actually appear.)

The combat system is basically a better version of the vanilla system, it fixes certain errors with tactic length and worse marshals choosing better tactics. Furthermore it adds a few new tactics, as well as a 'good' and 'bad' version of every tactic, so that better marshals are more significant, though not as severe as the old TPATT system.

I'm just using it for my own game, but would anybody be interested in this? I'm happy to upload it if there's interest. It's been perfectly compatible with no issues for me so far.
Unfortunately I do not have permission from Six Gun South, the maker of better armies, as he has been inactive for some time now.

Spoiler is mediafire link. Unload the two files in the folder (should be a .mod file and a folder named Better armies vanilla. NOT the base folder which says something like 'better armies unload into mod') directly into the mod folder (documents/paradox interactive/crusader kings II/mod). Check the box in the launcher to run the mod.

Should be compatible with HIP, I've run it a lot myself with no problems. Report any problems to me either in this thread or via PM and I will do my best to solve the issues.
Credit to Six Gun South for the mod, Ahhheygao for sprite fixes. Again I have no permission for this, will take down if requested.

you really should make this into a sort of submod-compatch for HIP (ie. giving it its own thread and all), fully crediting Six Gun South of course. That way, it's easier to tick on/off in the launcher :p
(hell, if the HIP team could contact Six Gun South, they really should adopt this as a submod featured in the main installer as well :laugh: )

Have you heard anything from Six Gun South yet? I've been using this mod and loving it so far, with no problems whatsoever. I'd love for it to be a semi-official sub mod with its own thread.

If this did go further in development, it'd need pretty heavy updating though: a lot of the cultural tactics are made to help the default cultural retinues, which no longer exist. I'd actually love to work on updating this mod further and updating the tactics to synergize with the new retinues, if you don't mind.

There's also the new units like War Elephants which I don't see mentioned in the tactics file at all. HIP has its own file for combat tactics, on the other hand, that does mention them, so I assume they probably should be in there somewhere.

Yeah, that's one of the things I'm going to have to address if FredMonroe is cool with it.

I'm hoping to also re-add the modifiers from vanilla for troop composition to affect tactic chance, which appears to be weirdly missing from this tactics file, in addition to a few other things like Charge Undefended Flank. Once I get things more fleshed out and working I'll post a thread.
