I am not a newbie in contrary an old vet, but who has forgotten a lot. EU-games I a played since the beginning but with EU3 and the ugly surface i finished and switched to CKII.
For some days I bought EU4 with several DLCs. Following the advice of Wiki I played Hesse:
http://www.eu4wiki.com/Hesse
That was desastrous because after building a big army and having a claim eg on Francfort always some days later the Kaiser with a bigger army appeared and I losted the battle.
So is Hesse really a good starting nation? Did I make perhaps some severe mistakes, should I wait till Habsburg is in war with France and therefor occupied or something else?
I will not start with Portugale and Castille because I have played them in former times for long periode as well as Brandenburg and Venice.
So Hesse would be an exciting goal.
