Pretty simple, really: is there any reason I would want my country to embrace a particular heresy? It seems like a super-bad deal. All the orthodox (as in non-heretics) countries get to declare Holy War on you and all your vassals hate you. Since the only event I've seen which makes you a heretic doesn't really hurt you not to convert (it imprisons your chaplain, but since it's an event imprisonment, you can immediately release him for +10 opinion from all vassals), it's doesn't seem like there's any reason at all to become a heretic.

Am I missing something?

I guess in the right circumstances it might be helpful or at least a nice chellange. Playing in Ireland for example I would give it a shot once the kingdom is created soIdont need any kind of popal invasion CB on Scotland/Wales. I might even try to bring back the norse as sweden sometime but not like the AI just did within the first decade of the game

Also you get holy war on the parent religion. Say if your cathar. Thats a holy war CB on the entire catholic world. You can convert your vassals/realm. So you get relations bonus's.

Keep in mind that the opposite is true too. The WHOLE catholic world have a holy war CB on you.

Well. Heresies have no head of church. Thus No excommunication etc. Also you get holy war on the parent religion. Say if your cathar. Thats a holy war CB on the entire catholic world. You can convert your vassals/realm. So you get relations bonus's.

Ah, so you do get the Holy War on everyone else. Okay, that's good. I was a unimportant Irish duchy at the time and I guess I just didn't have a chance to find out about the CB before everybody declared war on me. Cool.

Id like to add a folow upp question to the original question.

Pagan, is it even possible to play as if you convert?(wold you be able to keep playing when starting the savegame after you converted)
And what are the benefits of being a pagan?(not including the warrior cult troop bonus)

Paganism in England is gone unfortunately, but I wonder if there would be an effective way to import Norse paganism to the British Isles. ;) I suppose it would start with convincing a pagan to join your court and then having him tutor your heir.

Any better ideas?

I am pretty sure you can send your heir to be tutored any where on the map(as far as the educator wold accept).

Send your heir to sweden to be tutored by a swedish pagan ;) And if you dont realy whant to have a swedish culture you culd just use your next heir to be tutored by one of your curtiers that you have forced to change to the pagan religion and thus you gett a Norse pagan Saxon(for example). :)

Heresy is a game changer. The catch is that if you are a powerful ruler, you can't convert yourself and your vassals instantly. If you are a weak ruler, you are easy to conquer by members of the main faith. And if you are a vassal, you count as an infidel for title revocation. In any realm with medium or higher crown authority, it is free to revoke your titles.

I've been watching Byzantium tear itself a part for years because the Emperor became a monophysite. He has just enough support from vassals to stay in power, but most of us hate him, causing a kind of simmering of religious based minor civil wars that never really end. We'd have conquered Egypt by now if he hadn't converted. :(

Also notable though that you can focus on the tech tree that alleviates religious tension.
