The only thing that makes it harder is that they build up colonial holdings that you'd need to track down. Militarily, it just gets easier. Just put your mind (and money:D ) to it, and the tech gap just keeps widening. Frex, it's the 1650's, and my Russia has almost developed the Q-bomb (I'd have maxed out years ago if I hadn't set the budget to zero), China's at second at 32, and one or two countries are in the low teens. Spain's at 7, France at 6, and Turkey, at 5, would lose against my rebels. The only country to have higher morale than mine has been when Persia (twice:eek: ) declared independence: not only did they get my techs, they got the Shi'ite bonus to go with it.

goodluck with portugul. they are poor and have ltd manpower to start as well you will have to take out the spanish lowlands.

Well, with a little luck, I should be able to make it happen. As Venice I once took entire Turkey in a single war declared in 1496. Almost did the same with Byzantium too:D Plus: Portugal has an outstanding siege-leader (+2) from the outset. Only problem is Franche Comte - all hidden away in the interior of Europe...

Huh... forgive my ignorance, really, but I don't know what you mean by IGC. Also, is it possible to download the (whatever it is) on one computer, then transfer it on another? Cause the pc on which I play EU is a different one from the one I use to go on the net.

Thanks.

(and by the way, I'll have no problems in beating Spain, just as long as I'm allowed to annex it ;) )

IGC means "Improved Grand Campaign." It's just a scenario similar to the GC but ... well, improved.

I suppose you could put the IGC files on a floppy, but I don't really know. I guess you won't find out unless you try!

And hence he saw the light. Was it real? Was it a dream? He couldn't tell. But there it was, in front of him, standing like a god amongst the insects, shining with his Prometeian link, bringing forth knowledge to the worms who lived in the dark... And he bowed, and in awe managed to say his name... "M-Morpheus (some number I forget)". And he thanked this god, for this god had brought him the light.

Now bow, ye mortals! Bow to Morpheus, or I'll unleash my wrath!

(seriously man, thanks. Hope it works)

Ok - so I saved the whole thing on floppy and transferred to the other cpu. I took all the steps it said in the readme file and the thing did override my former EU files, as expected. But then there was a problem.

Now, before I illustrate it, in the patch it said that the latest version (in that case EU 1.09, I think) was needed. I wasn't sure I had it, but I installed it anyway and it seemed to work. Could it be that whatever problem I'm having now is dependent on the fact that I only had the original, normal EU?

Anyway, here's my problem: I can open and play all right the IGC campaign, but I can not set the parameters for the non-playing countries. Apparently I have to open the patch.exe program (done) and then the IGCConfig one, but in both cases they close immediately after I open them. I only managed to catch a glimpse, once, of something that said "Error in the parameter", or something of the sort.

So conclusions: I can play the IGC campaign, but I can not open the IGCConfig before I open EU, so I can not set other countries as annexable.

Any help would be VERY appreciated. Thanks.

And since I'm at it, I saw in the options section (while trying to see if I could set the countries as non-playing from within the game) an option saying something like "Forced Annexations": ON or OFF. (and it was set at ON). Now, what the heck does THAT mean?

Neither do I....

In response to Mr. Silver's problem, all I can suggest is to either keep trying or try to just download it again... If all else fails, you could simply edit the savegame files to transfer yourself into another country, possibly wrecking the first country on purpose to give yourself a fighting chance.

Possibly for people like me who have seen the board game. There, you can never* annex the capital of another country. One of the reasons the game was designed that way was to keep the diplomatic situation fluid, and prevent the players from getting control of minors 'once-and-for-all'.

*three types of exceptions: 1) certain random political events can result in a minor being annexed; 2) there are special rules for the Mameluks and Hungary; and 3) Turkey and Russia are allowed to annex a capital province if they are already adjacent to it.

If you find challanges more fun than steamrollers, I heartilly suggest you try it.

Well, I haven't experienced your problem, so I don't know just what happened, however, I would suggest the following:
Make sure EU is updated to the latest version. At the time of this writing, that would be 1.09.
This is what the readme file says. If I were you, considering the patch did not go well, I would uninstall EU completely. Double-check to make sure the directory structure and all files are deleted from the game directory. Reinstall EU. Install the latest patch. At the time of this writing, that would be 1.10. :) Make sure that you downloaded the 1.10 patch in the correct language. Now don't yell at me for suggesting something so, I don't know, stupid? I once downloaded and applied a bios patch for a Compaq server and after rebooting I realized I had applied a JAPANESE bios code! Boy! Was my face red! Luckily, I had applied so many of those patches on Compaq at that time that I was able to remember the keystrokes to apply the English version, considering I am unable to read anything more advanced than my "primer". Then I would apply the IGC to my new installation. That's how I did it and it worked for me. In fact, it has worked on a Windows 98 system and a Windows 2000 system for me. If it doesn't work for you, then I'm at a loss as well. :(

Good luck! :D

Oh, and I almost forgot, and this is probably the most important thing to check when you consider where and what your problem is. Make sure that you have the latest Java Virtual Machine from (*ugh*) Microsoft. The IGC_FAQ.txt file shows a link to Microsoft's Site .

In fact, do this first before installing. It makes sense. The config is what is running Java, AFAIK.

I hope all this helps.

Thanks Relee, I'll try following your advice, although I'm afraid it's gonna take quite a lot of time. I think I do have quite a late version of EU, since at the top left of the main screen there are a few little white letters saying EU (something I forget) 1.09. I only noticed after I installed the IGC, so it might have come from there. But is it possible that I brought directly the 1.09 version? Consider that I didn't buy it when it just came out; rather, only recently, on one of those little "old discounted" game-offering boxes.

Anyway, just wondering - is it possible to annex other important countries in EUII? And how about Legion, HOI, and Victoria?

Thanks again for the help.

Hey John Silver,

Yes. When installed from CD, my game shows up as v1.09 also. So the version of EU is probably OK.

I still believe that it is the version of Java Virtual Machine that is the problem.:p

Shouldn't take long, unless you plan on doing a full backup first.:D Always highly recommended and seldom done. I once installed a game only to have the install delete all my Win98 .DLL files. It only happened once. I was able to get it back by booting off floppy and manually extracting all the .DLL files off the Win98 CD back into the appropriate directory and still made it to bed before 2:00 A.M. Didn't get to play the game that day, though. Don't ask me for details as I have pretty much forgotten them, and have little desire to figure it out again.

As for your other questions, I will relay you to other, more knowledgeable folks, since I a mere babe-in-the-woods so far as actually playing EU is concerned, and I do not even own the other games you ask about. I will probably buy HOI, though. At least by the end of the year. But, as I keep saying, the new computer has to come first, as all the games I now want require something a little stronger than my itty-bitty Pentium I.

So! JVM update first. Uninstall & reinstall if that don't work. If THAT don't work, don't ask me on account of I won't know!

Sorry. I do tend to ramble on, don't I?

Download v1.10. Even if it doesn't make a difference with IGC (which it probably does), it eliminates bugs and stuff anyway.

P.S.: Do not surrender to the evil of EUII!!!!
