Hey there, fellow strategists. Allow me to introduce myself; I am an 18 year old guy who loves military strategy in games. I picked up Europa Universalis quite casually a certain number of months ago, and thought it was very good. It was pretty tough to get the hang of it, but I think I finally understands the way it works - except that I have a constant problem which inevitably leads me to defeat.

Simply said, when the cpu makes alliances, it means that if I attack a state I am sure to have other two or three declaring war on me. Fair enough. But why the heck is it that when I create an alliance with someone else, and someone declares war on me, the other states just sit there eating popcorn? Aren't they supposed to come to my aid? And another thing; When I get into an alliance and someone declares war on my allies, I can't find anywhere the command to join the war. Of course, I can declare war on my own, but then it does not count as a joint war, but as a separate one.

To give the best example, I was playing France (I always play France) in the Great Campaign. I went really well, I annexed loads of those little countries at my east, and organised an alliance with England, Venice, and Navarra. Suddenly Turkey declared war on Venice. England and Navarra joined. I wanted to join, but I couldn't find the command to do that. So I just went to diplomacy, Turkey, and Declare War. It did. But in the diplomacy table it treated it as a different war. Later in the game, still allied with them, Helvetia declared war on me. She was allied with Spain and someone else I can't remember. England & co. sat there and scratched themselves. I managed to handle it on my own, and achieve a victory. Then Hessen declared war on me. Again my allies did nothing. I began fighting on my own, although I was already strained from the previous war. I was just about to achieve victory, when Geneva declared war. Then Kleeves. Then Saxony. Then revolts began exploding all over my eastern provinces, despite a plus 2 stability. Now... I had had enough experience of the game to expect that thing to happen, and I had prepared as best I could. I went through something like twenty years of almost perpetually victorious wars, while crushing the revolts and maintaining the amount of investment on progress the highest in europe.

But it just wasn't enough. Countries kept declaring war, and I ended up in a situation where victory was no longer possible. And the only reason, the only reason why I could not handle it was because they were many and I was alone. So I have to know, if I am to get a victory someday, how on earth do you get your allies to fight with you when someone declares war? The help of Venice or England would have been enough in those cases to kick some european butt.

And since I'm at it, I'll ask a few questions more.
- Every now and then some provinces on the map seem to become white and shiny or something. What does that mean?
- Occasionally some very small rectangles with flags and weird simbols appear on the right hand side of the top of my screen. What do they mean?
- How in the most ungodly tree-hugging hippy crap do you REPAY DEBTS!!! In my last game I refused to make any debts in the first place, but in the past I remember making the debts, waiting five years, having the money ready to repay, and then not being able to. The result was that through all the debts which I strangely could not repay, interests began accumulating and my economy went to the barnyard. So let me get the process straight; I ask for a debt. I accumulate enough money to pay it back. I repay it - where?

If you Napoleons could answer my questions, you'll have a new king in Europe very soon. :)

Really, if someone can help, I'd really appreciate it. This would be such a great game if I could fight with fair rules.

Almost all of your questions could be answered by one thing: those little boxes. That's where a) Alliance DoW requests appear b) alliance support in war requests and c) loan repayment (i think) appear. Whenever you see one of those appear, click on it pronto.

The whiteness of the provinces indicates winter. Winter causes extra attrition and slower movement, so try to avoid those if at all possible

BTW, welcome to the forums!:D

Depending on what message settings you're using, always check the upper-right hand corner of the screen. Thats where alliance requests, declarations of war, peace offers, etc. occur. If you want your allies to help you in a war, you have to request their help. This usually happens right after you declare war. The options should automatically appear. Good luck, and echoing Morpheus, welcome to the forum.

Loan repayments also appear as little boxes in the upper right hand of the screen. You have to pay attention to that part of the screen. A lot of important game functions take place there. Most of the boxes will last 2 or 3 months, so if you're only a month away from being able to repay a loan, don't just extend it because the loan repayment box appears. Get the money, wait the month or two, and then repay...this saves a lot of money on interest. Also, if you're playing with sound on, every time a box pops up, you should hear a sound effect. Sometimes the sound means colonization was successful, but a good game tip is "everytime you hear a sound effect, glance up at the upper right of the screen and see if something new is there.

The first thing I do when I start a game is going to the "options=messages" and configure it to my taste; I prefer to have large windows pop-up with certain events, and also use a lot of auto-pause for these all-important messages such as DOW, end of alliances, loan payment, allies calling for help, etc.....

It helps a lot saving both my game and my sanity!

I prefer the little boxes. When i set them to show up and pause, they never pause and i often hit enter on impulse, causing sometimes annoying results.

BTW, if you're having a problem with everyone declaring war on you, then you have a problem with your bad boy rating. As a rule of thumb, don't annex many little guys and you'll be pretty ok.:)

John Silver,

Welcome to our little forum. (Ain't I the presumptuous one!)

I'm a newbie, too. Therefore, I will not add anything to the fine answers that you have already received.

I will state that me preference is to set all of the important (to me) messages to display and pause the game. It is only my preference because:

A) I tend to lock in on what's happening on the main screen and will miss those little icons in the upper-right hand corner.
2) I am old, slow, and not too bright.
III) I enjoy taking my time in everything I do.

I hope you enjoy the game! :D

Another thing; if you are having problems with everyone attacking you, then your badboy rating is so bad that every country with a capital on the same continent as yours AND every country with a common border with you will DOW you. This is called a Badboy war. To read your BB score open the save game file in wordpad, search for the string ‘badboy’ and look for the line with ‘badboy’ and your country tag (for example ‘RUS’ for Russia). If you have a value of 35+ then you have entered the period of BB wars. In BB wars, don’t bother calling your allies, because they will likely break away from the alliance. Also, be sure to have some large countries in your alliance when BB wars start, as it really help not having to fight the likes of Spain, France etc while concentrating on weaker enemies.

I've said this before, although maybe it's a IGC thing, but in the basic game there is no magic number that seperates a safe low BB from a dangerous high BB. The higher it is the more widespread the war will be, but all that really matters is that someone has a high rating. If someone has a rating of 15, let's say, and goes to war, the game will continually check every country with a rating of 14 or less to see if they declare war.

As for allies dropping out, I haven't seen any problem based exclusively on one's BB rating. As long as relations are in the positives, and especially in the double digits, they will generally join in if called. In my last big war (as Russia) Bohemia answered the call with relations at +2, and my BB rating was already over 100. Of course, by the time I finished force annexing a few Protestant states, relations had dropped a bit (to -200:rolleyes:), so I won't be calling on them again until I'm good and ready.

Dammit, if this Badboy story is true, then I'll have to forsake all my plans of creating a French empire dominating Europe. So what am I supposed to do to win with France? Just sit there and create a thriving economy to get victory points?

Anyway, I sure hope I'll be able to call on my allies. In my previous match, as I've stated, I'd have had no problem kicking some ass if I could have counted on the support of my allies. But does the BB value still go up if I annex countries that have declared war on me, rather than me on them?

By the way, since I'm at it, do you guys play EU on the net? Not that I'm terribly interested or anything, but since a game lasts a long amount of time, I was wondering how you guys got organised for the multi (if you do, that is).

And, since we're on the question area, I've read lots of stuff around here about you guys playing with smaller countries like Venice. But do you only play Venice in some pre-ordained campaigns, or do you actually get to use it in the Great Campaign. Cause I can't, you bet.
Last question: The thing that bugs me the most in this game is not being able to annex important countries (like spain and england, for example). Yet I've heard someone here say that you could easily beat Spain on her ground and then proceed to rolling up the rest of her provinces around the globe. Since a single war with Spain is unlikely to prevent her from future retaliation, does that strategy imply that someone found a way to annex Spain? Is there some kind of patch? Or were you speaking about EUII? In fact, can you annex anybody in EUII? And how about in the sequels to EU (HOI, Legion, etc.)? Can I just annex anyone, or do I still have to content myself with a few crappy provinces?

(oh Jove, that ended up being a fat load of questions, rather than a "last one". bah)

Thanks for the welcome everybody. :)

BB and stuff aren't that big of a deal if you really want to be a conqueror. Just think of them as a non-stab-dropping way to start a war with the entire world.

its a good idea not to topload a thread with so many questions, but hey,

with IGC you can make any country annexable, just dont play them as player countries. you'll see if you download and install.

read the aar's if you want to get hints on beating spain. there are many ways. its easier if you take it down by chunks...i think but some players have taken spain out in one long war in the beginning.

MP? ive never done it, i think most MP has gone over the EU2 which works better i am told.

In my next game I intend to play as Portugal and my first and only objective will be to annex Spain. Wait till Spain and France go to war, and then ... bye, bye Spain:D It will be interesting to see what happens when THE major conolizer gets taken out before the game really starts.

In my experince, it pays to take your one, principal competitor out the running already from the outset. Beating powers like France, Spain and Turkey will only get harder as the game progresses.

goodluck with portugul. they are poor and have ltd manpower to start as well you will have to take out the spanish lowlands.

i have had much better success bulding portugul up as a colonial empire and then around 1650 when i am the richest country in the world, grinding spain down.
