A big part of the game is fulfilling the ambitions of characters. However, it seems the player has very little influence regarding the ambitions "Getting married" and "Getting a son".

I've read that a higher personal prominence increases the chance of getting married and getting children for that character (does family prominence also help?). But are there any other factors that play a role? Does it, for example, help to leave the character unemployed so he can focus on his private live?

There is nothing to help them get a son as far as I know, but if you want to help them get married give them some important position like governor, tech job or something like that.

That works indeed, as such jobs increase prominence and thus increase the chance of getting married and getting children (so getting a son will also be more likely).

But the question was, if there are ways beside that.

AFAIK, there is no way to force a character to have a son. You know, that has been always a VERY personal task;).
Maybe what you have in mind is the matchmaker cheat: go into console and type "marriages". From then on, you are the mightiest Cupidus of all ages, and you can make every adult unmarried character fall in love with whoever you choose (well, whoever adult, unmarried and of the opposite sex. You see, game designers are a bit square).
Being the love God, though, is a demanding task. Every single character in your nation will remain so unless you give him a suitable mate. If you get tired, you can always type 'marriages' again at the console, and so give back to your fellows the divine right of choosing wrong.
Besides, if you want to increase the chances of your favourite having children, seek for him a young and 'lustful' (trait) bride.
