Help With Vassals

So I'm a long term EU player as you all know.

There are some things that confuse me about vassals and Personal Union juniors and how they operate.

When are provinces taken by the vassal/PU partner marked as theirs and when are they marked as yours? So when my PU Normandy takes a province it goes purple because I'm Byzantium most of the time. Sometimes though they take it and it goes grey which is their colour. What determines which one it is?

I've noticed this with my vassals too.

If they have a core on it, they take it.

I don't know why it might happen otherwise.

You join a war as an ally, peace out leaving your vassals in the war, and then they take territory. That's another way I could see it.

When you are allied in a war with them:

Vassals will only claim a province they have a core on and successfully siege. I'm not entirely sure about PU juniors but I think they will claim a province if you DON'T have a core on it whether they do or not.

If you leave a war then both are free to claim any province they occupy.

OK, so it's weird. I was fighting Portugal yesterday (whose capital was in Africa, but most possessions in NA), and my PU partner Normandy went on a rampage in NA and captured a load of provinces...all of them were occupied by Normandy rather than me. However in previous wars against Castille when they had taken provinces they all went to me!

I can't see a full pattern here, try as I might, except with cores.

I don't play much with PUs as I find that forcing them makes the game far too easy. In my limited experience with them I can definitely say they act differently than vassals in what provinces they will claim for themself. I'm not sure if it is any non-core province you don't have a core on, any non-core province not bordering a province you currently own/control or something else but it definitely isn't just provinces they have a core on.

PU juniors will take territory for themselves. I'm not positive, but I think they only take territory from their own culture group (Like Latin). Like I said, I'm not sure. As Germany, I had France in a PU, and they marched troops into the Balkans for me and claimed territory for me. However, in a war against Spain, they took territory for themselves. Vassals will take territory they have a core on, unless you start the siege, of course.
