Guys, I suppose this will in the end go into the Tutorial thread. ;)

I need to know what's the best way to assign:

1) Masters of the Arts

2) Kokujin

3) Daimyo

4) Submission of enemy Clan Leaders

The question evolves around YOUR priorities in selection of a character type vs title. Please be as detailed as possible for me and other newcomers who have no XP with CK series and the title issues.

Uh, nice topic - will be following closely to see what the best strategy is. I would say put close family relatives in as much of those positions as possible, right?

What do you mean by "submission of enemy clan leaders"? Don't they become kokujins when they agree to be subjugated?

1 Master of the Arts: Only thing that realy matters here is the skill level of the person. I don't think there is any consequance of having low relations with your masters.

2.Kokujin and Daimyo:

Using family members pro:
-bonus relation is realy nice
-they will not plot against you

Using family members con:
-they can become pretenders for the clan leadership, wich can lead to a civil war
-sometimes there are not enough family members, expecially early on

Using non-family members pro:
-no civil war

Using non-family members con:
-they can take part in plots against you
-relations will be lower then with family members

Overall:
I would always use family members if possible because the biggest con can be easily disabled. If you make sure that your nominated heir has enough land then the others won't vote against him(or at least its lot less likely).

Daimyo titles:
-I like to keep the rule that only family members can become daimyo. Daimyo can have any number of vassals so they can become realy powerfull. So its safer the have a family member in that position.
-if you run out of family members and need to hand out more titles make sure not to give any to people with the "ambitious" trait. People with "content" trait are best choice.

4.Submission of other clan leaders:
-Don't do it unless realy necesary, or you are at a point where nothing will stop you anyway. A subject clan leader can have any number of vassals including daimyo so its possible for them to grow realy powerfull(and they can plot against you!). As discussed at the daimyo part above, its not a good idea.

-Also keep in mind that the subjugated leader will hate you.

-Sometimes its ok to subjugate instead of finishing the conquest to exploit an opportunity elswhere. ( like your other neighbour is in a sudden civil war and you wan't to join it)

EDIT: to respond to Hister's quetsion:
What do you mean by "submission of enemy clan leaders"? Don't they become kokujins when they agree to be subjugated?
Nope they become subjugated "leaders" who can have kokujin or daimyo vassals of their own.

1. Masters: Highest stat.
2. Kokujin: My clan, good attributes, sane traits (no ambitious, no inbreds). Typically 2-3 provinces per one so he upgrades fast and gets some real income going to raise above the cap and pay me some real taxes. Preferably with multiple wives and heirs so noone else inherits after him. If I can get all of them 4 wives, I do it before I send him to rule on his own.
3. Daymio: Best kokujin of the region, always my clan, always with many wives and children. I split my kunis between two/three guys and then give better of them Daymio there transfering others under him so I reduce my vassal count.
4. Submission: Best to never do it. Other clan leader will be more than a Daymio and will create a web of his own loyalties within your clan. He'll flood your court with his sons and daughters, he will remain rebellious and you can't trust him. Whenever I do it, I later regret I haven't white peaced instead.

In general, you'll need a lot of family members so make sure everyone of your clan early on is "wifed" to the brim. 4 wives, all of them young and with good stats compensating for husband's faults. And look at parents of those wives too, sometimes you can turn your whole clan inbred with one wrong marriage to someone descending from your guy's grandparents' siblings married away to other clans. When you follow marriages closely, you'll have good surplus of characters in the court and good relations with neighbours you don't want to anger.

The problem with Masters of the arts is that at the beginning when your court is relatively small, your best men are most likely your heirs.
By giving them the mastery you are neglecting to give them lands and titles which in turn removes them from the possibility of voting for your heir apparent. The two things can't coincide: a Kokujin/Daimyo CANT be master of the arts and vice versa.
This means when you elect new masters and give your newly conquered lands to your starting sons, you get the penalty for the removal from their office.

I appreciate your answers on the Daymio/Kokujin and am interested to know how you use the TRANSFER VASSAL function.
