Help with the digital download of VV?

Apologies in advance if this is the wrong forum for a tech support question, but if it is I hope a mod will move me to the right spot .

I just downloaded the digital version of VV (from GamersGate) and I'm having a terrible time getting it to run at all. My scenario:

1) I bought Rome from directtodrive.
2) I upgraded Rome to 1.3
3) I played rome
4) I downloaded VV from GamersGate
5) It installed into a totally different directory from rome.
6) When I run it I get an error dialog with this in it:

Things I have tried:

A) upgraded directx
B) upgraded vv to 2.1
C) dropped my vv install directory on top of my rome directory (overwriting files) on the theory that the installer might have screwed up

To date none have worked.

Any suggestions would be appreciated .

There is a fix in the technical support forum, though you must register your game here in order to access it. I have never downloaded something form direct2drive, do they give you your registration key?

For some reason, even though I am registered, it says I can't view that page? I haven't been on these forums is a *very* long time; perhaps my account is "semi" retired or something?

Registering rome too seems to have done the trick, and that article helped as well.
