Started as a count in Tir Eoghain in the duchy of Ulster in Ireland. Got claims on and conquered the duchy of Ulster making myself the Petty King.

The last count I conquered was the count of Tir Chonail (in my de jure duchy) who hated me and never gave me any tax or levy. So I plotted and had him killed. When he died his heir (who was already the independent count of Cill Dara) inherited Tir Chonail which then became independent!

How come that county became independent? I'm the Duke/Petty King owning that county, how can a lowly count inheriting one of my counties usurp that county from my Duchy?

I can take it back by force no problem, but I'd like to understand the politics better.

The title was the same level as the inherited title, so the reciever maintains his current liege. He didn't usurp it, he inherited it. Best thing to do would have been to fabricate a claim on the couty and revoke it, or get him to revolt.

Thanks for the reply. I've actually found the section in the CK2 wiki that explains this now:

Inheritance Conflict

When a character is already landed but inherits a new title, a conflict could occur that is indicated in the game as an alert Vassal inheritance warning.

For example, if an English count inherits a French title from his mother upon her death, either the French or the English realm will expand as the game does not allow a character to be vassal to two different lieges.

If Crown Authority is not high enough to play a role, these conflicts are resolved as follows:

* The vassal contract that goes with the primary title stays intact. So if an English count (vassal to the King of England) inherits a French duchy (vassal to the King of France), this ducal title will be his primary title. He will become a French duke and his county will become part of France.

* Note that the inherited title cannot be the primary title if it is of equal or lower rank, because the heir simply never had the time to change it. Therefore, if an English count (vassal to the King of England) inherits a French county (vassal to the King of France), his English county will stay his primary title and his county in France will become part of England.

As far as the game goes that's fine, but is that historically correct? It seems to me as if the conflict inheritance rule as stated above is fine as long as both titles are of equal rank and independent, or both titles are of equal rank and are subordinate to lieges of equal rank, but in my case my county was owned by me (a Duke) and was inherited by an independent Count, in that circumstance I would have expected that the Count should have become my vassal. If that weren't the case then every county would be removed from its owning duchy whenever it was inherited by someone who wasn't already a vassal of the owning Duke.

It just seems a bit wrong to me in this specific case.

HGistorically the two counties would be owned by the same person, but one county would still be independent (or under some other liege), but the other under you. The game cannot handle this (it would mess up the comapt system and the who is at war with who system).

That an independent ruler does not become a vasal by default is a choice. I am not entirely sue why an independent ruler should become your vasal - he never gave you an oath to be count in the first place.

But at least he inherited a de Jure county, which means you can declare war on him and get it (for yourself, which you want with a capital region county anyway).
