Alright so I normally don't ask about this since I find it really hard to Role Play in CK2, however I do want to learn it one day since I REALLY want to do a mega campaign AAR (thinking about Poland or Umayyad). I almost always grab the most beneficial trait no matter what traits I have just so I have better stats. I want it to be in character and I am hoping some of you guys who play like this can give me any kind help. I won't worry about making an interesting chapter too much since I have a good grasp of history and can create my own sub-stories quite well.

I really think that AARs can be entirely without RP or with RP.

And if you want to do it with RP great, but even then it's a sliding scale of how ever much RP you want.

Though honestly to RP your actions /decisions based on your traits is one thing is a natural way to RP.

But to RP which trait to actually choose would be harder, you are the person who makes that decision, not the character so how would you RPing the character makes the choice the player on the other side of the 4th wall makes.

Though you could just use the characters other traits to RP what he might do, which decision he takes.

That is true I could at times use a sort of "My god what have I done?" to change them if need be. I also do know that I can just ignore RP and such but I would really like to do it this way. I read an AAR years back and I still re-read it because it's so well done; On top of that it was a mega campaign so therein lies my inspiration. Thank you also for the advice I need to practice it and to practice taking screenshots at the right time instead of just clicking away. Always a problem in all games with me when I know the text I speed read and click.

Best way is to get in your characters' heads and mix it up. Roll with the dice rather than fight against it too much. If the RNG gives you a bitter, crippled ruler, embrace that and have fun making her the most twisted, evil bitch in Europe! Next generation gives you a reset anyway.

This game is a theatre for your historically obsessed mind. How often i'll hum an imperial march as the Roman army marches into a reclaimed Roma, how i'll imagine my son, off to the Templars bidding his once bethrothed good bye and the last words uttered between an ancient monarch and his once beautiful consort.

RP tha fook out of it and never look back. Just get a feel for the dynasty, their hopes, ambitions and situations will just present themselves to you. Always stay true to your character's personality even if that goes against the traits they have.

Alright I will try these methods thank you guys really :) Hopefully I won't be conquered by any Mongols during the AAR. That would be less than good.

I enjoy thinking of present-day characters in real life and RP'ing them. For example, in real life, my uncle has a 7-yr old retarded son who is a jack-ass to everyone (punched his pre-school teacher, hoards and steals things, bullied a kid, his favorite word is "mine!" etc.). Everyone in my family calls him "Damien." I'll sometimes RP games as him with the traits Wroth, Slow, Possessed, Lunatic, Greedy, Gluttonous (the kid loves his desserts), Pride, Stubborn, and Cruel. Needless to say he doesn't do well in big kingdom starts. Also, I know this is cheating, but I make him immortal, because I want to see how long he can last before he's assassinated.

Or try other people, like Danny DeVito, Kim Kardashian, Donald Trump, etc. My favorite starts are with attractive blond female rulers with low IQ, with the attraction trait being crucial to inheritance. All the women are ambitious bitches, so they tend to argue a lot. I enjoy it when my vassals argue -- it makes the gameplay more exciting and fleshes out Conclave's features.

The world is your oyster.

I always feel more inclined to roleplay when I read/watch something that gets my brain into the medieval mindset. Like watching Game of Thrones helps for intrigue. And I finished reading a book about the Crusades yesterday, it shifts your PoV just a bit.

To me, RPing the game doesn't really have much to do with choosing traits, it's more about matching actions to the traits you already have. For example, if you have a chaste ruler, don't sleep around, don't take concubines, etc.; lusty ruler, OTOH, take the Seduction focus, take as many concubines as allowed, and try to bed everything that moves. Paranoid ruler? Take the Intrigue focus and spy on everyone. Zealous ruler? Don't build an observatory; avoid wars with co-religionists but launch holy wars on heretics and heathens.

Limit yourself to playing at lower speeds, 1-3. That will slow down the action and give you more time to think about your actions. If this gives you too much time, you can use it to examine your courtiers and vassals, their dynasties, and the history of various titles. For example I recently discovered that while the house of Breizh went extinct, one of the counts of my dynasty is the most direct heir of the ancient Breton kings so now I'm considering to conquer Brittany and install him as king.

If you can't bring yourself to take bad traits, there is also a mod out there that aims to make all personality traits worth having: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...ery-trait-should-be-worth-considering.899096/

Not all AARs need to be RP-heavy. One of my favourite AARs didn't even start as an AAR, instead it begun its life as someone showcasing an AI empire they had created. Here it is:

https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/ive-made-an-ai-monster-empire.773323/

Eventually it became the tale of an epic struggle between two world-spanning superpowers duking it out in desperate wars around the globe. Definitely recommended!

I remember seeing that thread and reading each new part of that world. That was really awesome and I admit I want something that long lasting, as in CK2 -> EU4 -> Vicky2 and then maybe into HOI3 if I can ever learn that game.

I've got a cast of meta-characters I've accumulated over the years from RPGs, miniatures games and MMOs that I tend to re-create.

One of the things I like doing is trying to get them into the game without using the Ruler Designer (it's not as hard as you may think; 2-3 generations is normally all I need). So my lusty Italian merchant adventurer, my mad Scottish inventor and my evil Spanish femme fatale bitch have all had their turn. The latter was one of my best campaigns; a twisted, incestuous, murderous succession of vixens that turned Navarre into a Catharist hub and eventually fractured Catholic Europe.

Don't mean to necro this thread (I don't even know how long till it's considered a necro) but I have taken all your advice and have indeed begun my AAR as you can see in my signature. It is by no means amazing and I would even argue that I think it's only okay. That being said thank you all for your advice, I think it will really help :) By the way if this is considered a necro or somewhere I am breaking a rule, I do apologize just I don't want to be that guy who makes a thread and then never listens to the feedback.
