Hi everyone. In my last game some important events occurred, which I was not informed of at the time but only found out about when I later checked the relevant screens. I went through the message settings but they seemed to be what would be desired, so I would greatly appreciate it if anyone can shed some light on the matter. I am playing CKDV2.1 with DVIP added.

I started out as Duke of the Western Isles. The events are as follows:-

1. Being vassalised by Connacht following an unsuccessful war with Leinster. I noticed that my shield had changed but could not think why. This one took a while to work out because I had earlier installed my son and successor as Count of Dublin, and he had the same name as the Duke of Connacht.

2. The Duke of Connacht later booted out my son and installed one of his sons as Count of Dublin. Again, I did not receive a message about this, but found out when I had a look at Dublin some time later.

3. My successor dying. It may be that I was not informed of this because he had sloped off to become Marshal of Sligo after being kicked out of Dublin, so wasn't at my court. I found out when I died and his son succeeded me.

Those are the big ones. Also, the game does not inform me when ex-court members slink back to my side. One of them had been exiled after being suspected of murder, so it was a bit disconcerting to find out she was back.

Your shield always changes when your primary title changes. In my current game where I started as count of Hohenstaufen I became Duke of Ferrara first (new shield) and then King of Venice (new shield).

When your son is a count and vassal of someone else then you won´t receive a message if his lord strips him of his title because the lands of your son are no part of your realm.

With your successor dying it´s the same as with your son - the game does not tell you about people that are related to you but that are not located within your realm (in your court or a vassal of you).

Wait, how did you become a vassal without noticing? Normally you have to accept an offer that someone has made or go to someone and offer to be their vassal.

I don't know! It was a very confusing war. Maybe I accidentally clicked on it the instant it came up.

Thanks for your clarifications Conjurer Dragon.

Now I'm getting used to CK's quirks - like finding out that getting + reputation is something to be avoided! - I'm enjoying it a lot. Previous Paradox games I've tried have always been rather intimidating, but the 'human face' of this one gives a good way in. I should be ready to tackle EU3 in due course, though I don't know if I'll ever manage Arsenal Of Democracy.

I still don't understand some of the inconsistencies though. Again, I've just found out that one of my vassals has seceded without any notification and without me having a valid claim on the county, even though it was part of my dynasty's starting counties.

It sounds like the Duke of Connacht stole your duke title when you lost that war, so you're a count now, right? A count cannot have any vassals, since he doesn't outrank anyone. A duke can have counts as vassals, but can't vassalize other dukes. A king can have counts and dukes as vassals, but not other kings.

So you're former vassal is now your equal.

Oh sorry Sjones, I omitted to mention that this was in a new game where I started as Duke of Moray and later acquired the crown of Scotland. The count of Ross sneaked out of my kingdom without telling anyone.

Oh, well then, was he a vassal of one of your dukes? Because if they break their vassalage to their duke leige, you are not informed, even though a piece of your kingdom just left.
