Hi, I've been trying to make gently rolling coastlines but since all I'm getting are sheer cliffs my marinas and ports are towering over the ships they're supposed to be servicing.

They look like like this

Trying to make them look more like this

I'm wasting huge amounts of money on terraforming here. How can I smooth out a cliff to make it more like a beach that the ships can actually reach?

First you need to use the level tool to get the terrain on the height you want for the general area of assets used (right click on the target height first). After that you may need the slope tool depending on height difference (target height needs to be set once again). There's always some trial and error at play with terraforming.

Your coastline is too high to begin with. I had the same problem in my first city when I tried to create canals. It's simply a bad choice of map that doesn't lend itself well to coastal structures. Lowering the entire coastline will create too much of an upheaval for your city, so your best bet is to simply start again on a better map closer to sea level.
