The divided Mesoamerica really took me a long time, only to control most of the culture circle Aztec is in. Found Castille on Haiti, 1529 to neighbour with him, 1545 finished westernisation.

So what is the preferable way to colonise? To take the nearest ones or to take the far yet rich ones? The faraway ones take the colonists more than a year to arrive, and it is too sparse, several in the thirteen colonies, several in Venezuela and nearby. I allied with Austria, and he just involved me in a war with Britain on the rivalry side. My military tech is 6 levels behind, and the land force limit is just 48, with a poor navy. I really worried about my northeast domains.

So could you help me with the colonisation strategy?

Open the economic view, focus on provinces with at least 3 BT and colonize the trade centers ASAP (Lousiana...) Colonies need at least 10 years to complete, so 1 year of travel is ok if the colony gives twice the income.
The Antilles have a very good BT but you might face a lot of competition against the Europeans if you mean to keep them. You could try to ally France and then drag her to war against Spain, in the mean time you steal the islands...Be prepared for revolts though. Humanism or religion might be necessary sooner or later.

I don't know if they changed the CN formation mechanics. In 1.7 you needed a land connection in South America to prevent the CNs, but if you capital is in Mexico it's considered North America so you can settle the NA coast at will.

That "over year" colonist travel time is a bug. I think it happens when some your land is sieged or blockaded by enemy/rebels. Just restart after the war/occupation is over and you'll get normal travel time again.

If you take colony on another continent without direct connection, then I think it will be overseas ~ 75 autonomy, which is worse than standard 50%. So watch that.

I prefer to build "wall" in all 4 directions starting from your main area, and to take whole Carribean area where I collect. By 1600 I occupied coast from Florida to northern Brazil and from southern Inca area to California. Considering the speed of other colonizers ( I have just two small Portuguese CNs on south, and two other CNs in Carribean which I am destroying at the moment, Spain is just retarded and throws colonies all over the place without forming anything), I think in this patch you can get majority of both americas for yourself without many wars. That just shows how absurdly OP colonies are :) They should nerf them even more...

BTW, the whole thing just seems much easier than I remember from 1.5. Not sure what is causing this. Maybe the fact that I can have 30 carracks at my disposal all the time, because I can mothball them and crush whatever whiteskins send to me before they even manage to land. Or the fact that there are no super huge CNs at my doorstep, because they have so many provinces to colonize and they are just slow...

If they own land in the Caribbean, they won't be my ally for long.

TAKE IT ALLLLLLLLL!!!!!!

Divide and conquer. Given the option to burn all bridges at once or one at a time, I'll take the latter ;).

In my Maya game it was a pain fighting France, Spain, Portugal, and England all in short sequences with a massive tech deficit while playing friendly MP (Friend was Algiers). You have to concentrate so much on naval to catch them before landing, it's pretty tense when you're just running speed 3 and generally not pausing. I even lost territory to France once because they had lots of heavies, though I took it back within 5 years by declaring on Scotland and spamming out more heavies, also taking the rest of the Caribbean. IIRC I had almost all of the 1.7 version of Caribbean by 1550, but there are more provinces in 1.8 so that will take a bit longer.

It's not like it's bugged all the time. I am at 1620 and it bugged just once. If you have extreme travel times all the time than you are seeing something else than I did.
And there is no such thing as finished computer program (that's developer in me speaking) :)

Take centers of trade and high base-tax first. The carribean islands are good to go for, because it can be a pain to get claims on them, and coring without claims is a pain, especially base tax 8 provinces.
