My heir is a piece of crap from some no-namer family, and not my dynasty. I am starting a new game, my first time with creating a ruler.

However, my default Heir is some lowly oaf! How do i "place" my son as the heir? All of my sons are 1-3 years old, and i have no knowledge of this game. I looked all over the forums but just get more confused.

So, how do i "click button" "appoint heir" "click son" "Oh good, i may continue."

i have not even unpaused from the game start to ensure i do it perfectlty and don't make stupid mistakes. I am playing a newly created Scottish ruler. That is, just a guy i made with the create a ruler thing.

Your kids should come up as the heirs to the title.

You didn't matri-marry or something silly like that, did you? The game does these things automatically. Also, are they non-legitimized bastards?

You can not pick your heir.

You say you have agnotic Primo which means your oldest male son comes first and then his sons after him...then your second son and his babies, and third son and babies and so on and so on and so on ad infinitum.

The only way you can "select" an heir is if you change your succession laws to "elective" This means you can nominate a chosen heir, but your vassals, if your a king your vassal dukes are electors, if you are a Duke your vassal counts are electors. Anyways just remember if you switch to elective just because you pick your son doesn't mean your vassals will vote for him, they may pick themselves or someone else.

If you have good relations and your little monster is of age then usually they will vote for who you pick....usually.

So hopefully that answers your question. Basically your heir is tied to whichever succession law you choose no way around that at all, in game you can look at the rules of your succession law by going to the law page and looking at the little hint pop up menu think it should appear when you put the mouse over the little "?"

If you so desire to rid yourself of your current heir you could always throw him from the walls with a nice little plot or assassination.

edit: Forgot that you mentioned your current heir is not of your dynasty. Pay attention to your marriages as well and never ever ever matrilineally marry your male ruler, it will end in "Game Over" very quickly.

My guess is that you are under elective succession laws. You need to go to your laws window and try to change it to Primogeniture if you want your oldest son to inherit everything. If you want inheritance to spread out among your sons you can go with Gavelkind. If you cannot change the succession laws, you need to go to the laws tab and nominate your own son as your successor. This will cast your vote in favor of your own son. However, that doesn't mean he is going to automatically inherit, other electors need to vote in favor of him succeeding you.

I used the sov tool and edited the scottland king. I have a "default" wife from clicking the "is married" box. I have just started the game and am doing the "pre-unpause" things when i saw a message that my heir is not on the throne and none the 5 sons i created are not the heir. (i didn't create them, it lets you say if you have children when you create).

Unpause the game. It takes a day for the game to check who's who and set heirs properly especially with created rulers.

That could be the issue. I also wonder on the ruler creator can you make it a matrilineal marriage? If so maybe he checked that and therefore his sons are not of his dynasty. Wild guess though.
