HELP! Why can't I make alliances?

Maybe I am a big tool but I have played as Germany and couldn't make an alliance with ANYONE! I tried to influence a ton of countries, did successful coups and they were useless.

I can't even get Italy in an alliance? what the heck is going on? I tried hungary, bulgaria, austria after a coup and nothing. ALWAYS rejected. Am I doing something wrong?

Diplomatic actions take time & patience - IRL, Italy for example wasn't allied to the Germans in HOI terms until June 1940. Also, try to build up a large amount of DI before trying actions like coups - the more DI you have in the stockpile, the better your chances of success are.

Yes... patience is one thing I've found to be very important.

It seems that doing well in the world also impresses your neighbors. After taking out Czechoslovakia (and giving a hunk to Hungary) both Bulgaria and Hungary very quickly joined my alliance (1938). However, Rumania and Italy are still holding out on me.
