Ok, so I've got myself into a bit of a pickle in my current England game (1.07, LOR, SOI). I'm playing as a custom made Duke of Kent (vassal of Richard I of England). My wife is Welsh and has a weak claim to the Duchy of Gwynned (I think that's it). I decided to push my claim so that my son would then inherit the Duchy once my wife died and declared war. The Welsh put up no resistance after wasting away in a civil war and I took the capital with no hassle. Before the final siege finished, I invited my Welsh brother-in-law, Iowerth, to my court as he was an amazing diplomat. That was a big mistake. King Richard then decided to push Iowerth's strong claim on the Duchy of Gwynned. Now I have the English army bearing down on my wife's potential Duchy. So, I see my options as being:

  • Withdraw my troops and retreat back to England, letting Richard do as he pleases.
  • Sieze the Duchy and let my wife face the English alone. Putting my only son at risk if my wife were to perish.
  • Murder Iowerth (unfortunately no-one is willing to join this plot).
  • Murder my wife (again, no-one is willing to plot against her).

Any other ideas? I'm not quite sure how to get around this one other than to back off and wait for my next chance.

If you seize the duchy won't England's war end inconclusively?

I assume that England will simply continue it's push as they have a stronger claim over my wife.

to the best of my knowledge, if you declare war on someone who is at war, and the first war end, your war end inconclusively if your war is for the same reason, or if control of the title you are going after changes hands. I could be wrong though... it might only work for Independence wars...

edit: easy to test, save, win the war as fast as you can and see if Richards war ends inconclusively. If it does, keep going, if it doesn't, reload from the save and do something else.

I tested it and the Duchy changed hands to my wife, the English war continued and for some reason, the game now says I have no heir. My only son is the heir to Gwynedd now but he should also be the heir to Kent, which is a bit odd. He's still in my court, too.

EDIT: Ok, so now I'm thinking this may be bugged instead of an interesting bit of gameplay. I seized the duchy and withdrew my troops. King Richard placed an army on Gwynedd but as I am his vassal, I already have the county under my control (lines on the province)and his army is just standing there twiddling their thumbs. Is this normal?

When the English war continued, is your wife listed as the opponent?

Yeah, but because I have occupied Gwynedd the English army is just standing around looking confused.

Has the English king landed Iorweth or is he related to him? If not, you could let the English win and then beat Iorweth afterwards

No, I stupidly invited him to my court before my war was over and he's in my court. I was thinking about beating Iowerth once he takes the throne and snatching it from him, like you suggested.

Hmm. I don't know the answer but here is a similar situation I have right now actually. I'm not really sure if it's a bug or more a quirk of the game rules. My liege, the Byzantine Emperor was Holy warring the Abbasids in Benevento but the Doge of Genoa was doing the same and had occupied most of the holdings. Neither of them could win the war since both had holdings, and they couldn't take the holdings from each other since they weren't at war. I was a pretty powerful Doux of Athens so I declared war (de jure Ducal claim) on Genoa for the county of Capua and in the process sacked all the Doge's holdings in Benevento, thereby occupying them myself. But somehow this didn't count for my liege's war, even after I ended the war with Genoa. So now it's at a standstill, collectively we control the whole duchy but my liege can't occupy the holdings himself and so doesn't get credit in the warscore.

Anyway back to your situation, I think eventually your liege will get tired of the endless war against your wife and white peace. He has no way to capture the holdings since they are yours. But the situation with your heir is weird, I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be anymore.

As above, imprison and execute. Alternatively, you may attempt to assassinate without a plot via a personal diplomacy menu.

That's pretty much the same as what has happened to me. Weird.

The whole situation seems a bit weird to me, to be honest.

Imprison Iowerth then execute. As a duke you can get away with a lot more than as a King (not as many vassals).

I didn't go as far as execution but I did imprison him and then banish him. He fled back to the Welsh county of Gwynedd and England was still pushing his claim which seemed odd as he was no longer part of an English court.

Alternatively, you may attempt to assassinate without a plot via a personal diplomacy menu.

Not enough gold. To kill him or my wife costs 250g. I currently have 56g and with a Count's wages, it'd take a while to save up.
