Untrue; it simply took on different forms than what we currently consider heradlry. E.g., the aforementioned cheek tattoos/scars.

Information on Africa from this period is extremely sketchy. And I doubt you will find common symbols used by a complete tribe.

I would not despair quite so easily; since we're dealing in all cases here with centralized kingdoms (such as the Ashanti Empire, Kingdom of Mali, etc.), it should be not be impossible to find some symbology or simmilar which was used to identify that particular Empire. You just need to dig a little deeeper and into more specialist literature.

Johan, following is an Encyclopædia Britannica Article that should give you a lead for the Ashanti.

Asante empire

Asante also spelled Ashanti West African state that occupied what is now southern Ghana in the 18th and 19th centuries. Extending from the Komoé River in the west to the Togo Mountains in the east, the Asante empire was active in the slave trade in the 18th century and unsuccessfully resisted British penetration in the 19th.

In their struggle against the suzerain state of Denkyera and lesser neighbouring states, the Asante people made little headway until the accession, probably in the 1670s, of Osei Tutu. After a series of campaigns that crushed all opposition, he was installed as Asantehene, or king of the new Asante state, whose capital was named Kumasi. His authority was symbolized by the Golden Stool, on which all subsequent kings were enthroned.

Vladimir is muscovy. The state which was later muscovy was actualy originally the state of Vladimir. The capital was moved over the river to get it into safer position vis a vis the mongols. It is the same country as muscovy/russia.

Not in my sources. They say Muscovy was a small state when Suzdal was one of the most powerful russian states in the area.

Greven, the Grand Prince of Vladimir was the most important title in northern Russia; whoever held it had power and prestige over his fellow princes. After 1389, the title and lands of the Grand Prince of Vladimir were always held by the Prince of Moscow. If you don't believe me, check whatever lists of rulers you have; you'll notice that Moscow and Vladimir were always held by the same person during this period. Suzdal was a separate state, true, but it was held by a close relative of the Prince of Moscow, and, indeed, was at times united with Moscow. By 1419, Moscow was supreme in northeastern Russia; states such as Suzdal, Nizhniy Novgorod, Uglich, Galich, Bryansk, Zvenigorod, and Beloozero were pretty much vassals of Moscow/Vladimir. Only Tver, Novgorod, Pskov, and (to a point) Ryazan were idependnet of Muscovite control by that point.
