Hi all,

First off let me say I have never had a PU other than the Iberian Wedding, I have claimed a throne a few times but nothing ever happned.

My understanding of PU, is RM and have a chance of another faction getting a leader of your Faction. if there is then a contested succession, you can claim the throne. which gives a CB to go to war and get a PU if you win. Or there is a small chance of getting a PU without the war.

Now I guess my question is when is it worth it to do this? I usually use RM to help improve relations with people I want to Ally and my vassals. but if I choose to claim, i get negative opinion with the other people I have RM with. Vassals this isnt such an issue, but it can cause havoc with allies.

I guess my question is when should I be trying to force PU's onto people/using the claim throne.

Cheers knoddy

Forcing PUs only works if they have a leader of your dynasty, who has a weak claim and no heir. If they have a different dynasty, it's not remotely worth doing. If you do claim throne, you need to be prepared to go to war immediately in case they get an heir.

There are IMO two times to claim the throne of another nation.

First, is if they are in the same dynasty and have a weak or no heir. In that case, you can actually go to war over your claim and, god willing, form a PU.

Second, if they are old and it tells you that some other country will form a PU with them on monarch death. In that case, claiming the throne can put you in a succession war with that other nation.

yup i know you need to have same dynasty to claim.

So the ingame notification of disputed succession tells you if any factions have no heir or weak claim heir? and if you happen to have the same dynasty as that faction and more prestige you can claim it and get the CB?

More or less yes. The ingame notification is also useful as if there's anyone of note you can check them out. If their monarch is old, you can royal marriage them to fish for a potential dynasty change, or rival whoever is going to be the leader of their personal union so you can contest it.

If the target of PU has allies (which they tend to), you'd likely have to occupy all of the target's provinces, however, just that and no more since the target of the PU will always be the war leader. Remember that claimthrone cb also gives you AE. I got 30 AE from forcing Bohemia in a PU and I'm assuming that this is based on the number of provinces they have rather than a set specific amount of AE for every PU (otherwise makes no sense that it costs 30 AE to PU an OPM).

The reason you're having trouble understanding PUs is because the mechanic is honestly very undeveloped right now. At release it was super easy to get PUs - if a nation had a weak heir or no heir, and you married them, you could claim throne and force a union. Now you have to infiltrate your dynasty then wait for the same scenario. It's 100% luck based. Hopefully they improve it in another patch.
