I selected GOG for my Kickstarter backer reward and have now added it to my account so I can download at launch and start playing during my daughter's naptime.

However, I also wanted to get my brother a copy for his birthday. I used my PDX coupon to buy a copy, and it looks like I get a steam copy and a Paradox copy.

Is anyone familiar with the PDX store? I didn't see an option to gift it. Presumably I could just give my brother the steam key once PDX posts them, but now I'm a little nervous since I've linked my steam account to my PDX account for forum purposes. Is it going to auto-associate it with my steam account?

Second, I now have a steam copy and a Paradox copy in my paradox account. What's up with the PDX version? Did I effectively buy two copies? Can I legally give the PDX version to someone else and the steam key to my brother? Can I just log in to pdx and download the pdx copy to their machine, so long as I don't use it anywhere else? I've def got a friend who would appreciate it.

Lastly, I haven't used GoG much? Since it is a DRM free version, is there any way to make sure I get patches as they release or at least get notified?

Help much appreciated!

Paradox typically send out keys by e-mail which you then activate via Steam yourself. So if that's how Battletech is being done then you will be able to give your brother that key/forward him the e-mail. The e-mails typically arrive a few hours before something is released.

With regards to the PDX store- in my experience (of 2 whole games) PDX supplies the key which you put into steam yourself so I don't think it associates with your account.

You have purchased two copies, you are not getting three.

I know tone is hard to distinguish on the internet, but why so terse? I'm just asking if anyone is familiar with how PDX versions work. When you make the purchase the cart shows two copies (steam and Paradox) at full price each, then a discount to bring one of them to $0.00. Surely you can understand that leaves open the possibility that they are distinct.

I won't be the least bit bothered if they are not, but if they happen to be legally distinct, why not let someone else enjoy the game that otherwise might not be able to? No sense letting it go to waste.

I'm not trying to steal anything, I'm asking a question. It's like I bought a chocolate bar and the guy at the counter gave me two. I'm not even eating both bars. I'm going back to the counter and asking, "Hey, did you mean to give me an extra bar?" If he says no I'll hand it back and say Thank You. If he says, "Yeah, it's cool, keep it," I'll give it to the hungry guy hanging out outside.

I guess I've known people who would get upset about that, but I really don't understand the mindset. If I wanted to be sneaky, I wouldn't have asked here (or the pdx support ticket I submitted) and would have just installed it on someone else's machine without checking. I'm above board here asking to see if I can legit give a hungry guy a chocolate bar. There's no need for clapping at me.

If I have indeed misread tone, let me know and I'll retract this.

They're not distinct copies. :) Paradox copy is tied to the steam account and forum account.
Cool. Thanks for the info. I thought they might be linked in some way.

That's interesting though since I'm giving the steam key to my brother, but presumably both are tied to my forum/paradox account. He isn't the type to ever look at the forums anyway so I don't think it will matter, but it is a bit of an oversight on the way the purchases work. I'm surprised they didn't have a "purchase as gift" option.

Btw, I've already received a reply to my support ticket that indicated it was ok to give the stream key to my bro, as long as I understand that he would then be the "owner" and I couldn't use it. He forwarded it up to legal for further response on the PDX version.

As I said, I don't mind at all that it is unusable, I just noticed the oddity of the way it was rung up and thought why not give it to someone who can't afford it?

Yeah, you'll have no issue with the Steam key as support (and us!) have said. Nothing happens until you put the Steam code in to activate the game and then synch to your forum account anyways. The Pdox store has a habit of sending people multiple keys so, yeah, it's well tested that you can give them to someone else. ;)

I'm not even sure you'd be able to play the game via the Paradox Launcher - so far, I'm pretty sure Stellaris is the only game which you can. Things change though so not 100% on that. But definitely part of the launcher is that it's tied to your forum account and steam account.

Is a bit confusing with all these launchers, that's for sure.
