hi all,
heretofore my experience with TBS games has been the strategic component of Medieval: Total War, but i admit i'm hooked on the concept.

Victoria sounds just up my street, so i bought EU2 to tide me over till its UK release and familiarise myself with the controls.....................

and i'm stumped, there doesn't appear to be any tutorial, and its almsost completely impenetrable to trial and error.
thus far i have managed to move some troops to an adjacentr territory, and *possibly* have created some more, tho i'm not entirely sure that was my influence.

are there any good online resources, because i read in the FAQ that Victoria will not have one either?

cheers

The forums are the best source of info if you're stuck... Go look at the older threads in the HOI forum, for example... lots of people asking questions about the simplest things (to those who've been playing awhile), and having them answered without even being made fun of... :)

There's a few FAQ's around somewhere, as well, I believe. As has been said, just ask if you're stuck. :)

Don't bother with the manual, as it's a badly written work of Satan.

EU2 has a tutorial indeed...There are many Faqs around, too... plus many more helpful players...

And please, don't disregard EU2 (as many of the new Victoria players do)...it's still my favourite game in the world....:D

i'm playing through the tutorial.

i control all of england.

my mission is to find some nation in the Andoran mountains.

my ships sink as soon as they hit uncharted territory.

i don't have the cash to replace these sunken 'adventurers' in the numbers they are dieing in.

theres nothing to do in Britain, as i have placed a colonist and a trader.

what am i missing? i know this game is great, but i've played for an hour, achieved little of value, and am bored to tears! i know this is not right, but what am i missing?

cheers

p.s. is there a speed up time option? i have a EU2 as a budget title, thus no manual.

Your best bet is to play France in the Age of Exploration scenario first, rather than the tutorial - you can't go much wrong with them.

There should be.... well, another option would be England in the Grand Campaign. Although you do start out in a war, you have a powerful country that shouldn't have much trouble fighting that war to at least a stalemate.

My advice is to avoid missions. They are mostly just annoying, and can even be impossible to complete. You can turn them off, as most players do.

Ships that is not in port will start to suffer attrition (displayed as a number in the upper right corner when you select a fleet). To keep your fleet above the waves you must allow your sailors to get some R&R in a friendly port. (Attrition is reset when a ship enters a port.)

The greatest disadvantage of EU2 is that there can be boring moments if you are not at war or colonizing/exploring the world. Many wars have been started to avoid bordom. ;)

You can change the speed of the game in the Options-menu, or you can use <CTRL> <+>/<->.

FYI merchant = trader.

If you start playing as England in grand campaign, you can annex France, low countries or even Castille. In 1500s (or after you captured Castile/Portugal capital) you can go to America and start colonizing.

There are just too many things you can do. Try to experiment a little.
