Haven't played in a bit--this is what I'm looking for:
a country in Europe (northern preferably) that is really tough. Above all I don't want to do colonizing, so Portugal may be bad.

I wanted to maybe do Norway, they don't exist.

I've done Baden, Italian states, and French minors a bunch, so want to go in a different direction.

Thoughts: Poland--is this tough? If it is that could be fun. Norway doesn't exist anymore? Sweden if I stay Catholic--but that seems easy--maybe if I start later than 1419? Prussia just seems easy, might it be tough if I start later than 1419 and stay Catholic? Hungry seems easy.

I'd rather not do a one province state, but I think I might have to. Anyone got ideas or suggestions?

Norway exists and is playable in the GC in the latest patches.

Other then that, I had a hell of a game with Pommern dual German/Polish culture.

Huh? I just downloaded 1.07 and the latest beta patch (Nov 26).

I really want a strong challenge. Dual cultures doesn't really indicate that will be happening.

Well your posts don't really indicate your playing style or experience with the game so he was just trying to help.

If you want to limit yourself to Northern Europe. Just pick a country you would enjoy playing, place the settings on the hardest and if you still are looking for a challenge, restrict yourself with your own rules (like no pauses, max 1/2 supportable army, stability < 3, etc).

And Norway is playable.

Actually, with the latest beta it isn't. There was an error in the start conditions that makes it not appear but I fixed it and Norway is back in action.

I think what I am going to do is play Poland but give a province to Prussia and three to Lithuania and delete the event where I inherit Lithuania. That way I start as a three province nation surrounded by big guys and still get cool events and stuff.

Sound like a good idea people?

If there is a reason this is a bad idea let me know, I am going to eat and then play, I've already got the senario modified and event deleted.

I'm about to start. I'm torn now: should I just start with one province (warsaw) or keep the three I have? Please voice opinions people, I want this to work and really don't want to waste hours to find it is too easy or too hard.

I modified the start conditions so Poland only started with 1 province--Warsaw. The northern provinces I gave to Prussia and the rest to Lithuania.

This made the game what I wanted--a challenging game in Europe in a country with events and leaders and room to expand historically.

I got up to three provinces, before being reduced in two wars back to one. I quit then due to imminent bankruptcy in 1550. (I play with the house rule bankruptcy = game over). All in all very fun and challenging.

Patch 1.07 threw me for a loop. It is REALLY tough for small countries with excess cost over your allotment.

Just started a game as mecklemburg, one province, true, they have a CoT.. but they also got a bunch of hungry countries in the neighbourhood (Poland, Denmark, Sweden) and I must say it looks to be a fun game... downside is you have little to no events or leaders..

ANOTHER one province minor that realy rocks is Croatia.

Or else once try a larger unstable one like Golden Horde or the Timurids.

Altough all are not north European.

Why only wanna play there?

I found Brabant to be a blast. Wars against Burgundy and England first, followed by a hungry France to the south and later on Austria lays claim to your lands. Finally Spain wants you. Great fun. I only survived by going after the Aztek realm after a war against Spain (Sardinia gained independence, and I gained maps).

Seems to me there are enough one province minors in the world, no need to turn Poland into one. Indeed, having a big Poland can be mighty dangerous to the minors.. you might find a harder game by leaving Poland big and choosing someone to the west a bit :D

There are too many too choose, me I like the Italian minors. Plenty of one cultures in there, you are near France and Austria, and you have the goal of unifying Italy.. good times

Oh.. one thought. Taking out that event will probably help you. IIRC that's the event that drops Poland down to Orthodox tech, without it you'll keep latin. I really don't expect you to be a one province minor by the time that event was supposed to fire (mid 1500s?), you'll probably have a bunch of Lith anyway. So if you planned on being a big country for awhile past that event you'll be stronger for never having it.
