Yello!

With Utopia almost being released, this is the perfect time to start designing my species for an upcoming roleplaying mp-game (with still some room to join, see the ps). However, I'm not very sure about how to design my species.

I was thinking about a 'knight templar order' style species. Spiritual warriors who fight to protect the pilgrims (weaker people), potentially for payment. But then I remembered our wonderful community, and I figured the community might have some great ideas!

So atm I was thinking:
Spiritualist: this is a given, we are warriors of God after all.
Militarist: We are a military order after all.
Egalitarian: I am not so sure about this one, but it opens up some civics I find fitting. Everybody is equal in the eyes of God and so on.

Civics:
I was thinking about 'Distinguished admirality' because the order would have trained noble leaders. Also 'beacon of liberty' because we protect the weaker ones? And Free Haven because we would of course shelter refugees!

Traits I only got thrifty, because they were bankers in history.

So what ideas do you guys have? What traits would you think fit this species? How about the ascension perks and on which I should focus spending unity?

Thanx! Maybe I even let the roleplay be partly community driven when there are people with some great ideas! If I got the time for it, an AAR could follow too.

If I were designing this, I would consider authoritarian for the third ethic—because “knight templars” are disciplined, arbitrating, and hierarchical—and an oligarchic government archetype, definitely. In civics, I would take “Warrior Culture” because of some stuff about Arthurian ideals and trial by combat under God: the winner is always in the right because their cause is always true. Appropriate traditions might be domination (for subjugation wars *and* peaceful integration), harmony, and diplomacy. Maybe supremacy sprinkled in? You should decide if they are to be mercenaries or not. However, it is clear that you wish to allow for refugees and supporting other species—and the xenophile ethic is unquestionably suitable for this kind of play. Lastly, some fun ascendancies to combo might be one vision, force projection, galactic defenders, and the fallen empire killer.

Also, remember that we are not yet sure of all the civics available in the update. If there were a spiritualist civic for cheaper leaders, or another for increased trade attraction… I would consider these, too. Although I laud your eagerness (and this was fun to think about for a mo), this thread might be premature! Have fun with your game!

I suggest Militarist, Spiritualist (those two of course!) and ... Xenophile! It will help other empires appreciate the good work you do and also represent your benevolent attitude towards refugees etc.

Distinguished Admiralty sounds good, and also maybe Meritocracy? It gives your leaders +1 skill level, and could represent the intense training your order practices.

Thrifty sounds like a good trait, because it also could represent a kind of "ascetic" lifestyle appropriate to monastic types. It will also help some with maintaining your fleet costs.

As far as Traditions go, you may want to spring for Supremacy first, to have a "fleet first" kind of thing going on, but then also Harmony - I imagine your empire, like the Templars, having fewer planets/outposts rather than a sprawling empire, and those two traditions will help you punch above your weight! You can also take the ascension perk, I forget the name, that raises your fleet cap, and be a galactic contender even without expanding much. Prosperity as a third tradition tree will help you pay for a big fleet more easily, and then possibly Discovery, which will help you stay ahead on tech.

I would avoid Expansion and Domination for RP reasons, if I'm understanding your concept correctly, but Diplomacy might also fit in there. :)
