I am playing as Ming, it is the mid 1600s, and I got Japan in a PU. Now while I consider myself to good at this game, I am relatively inexperienced with PUs. I have neighboring heretic religion penalty -40 and have a casus belli -15. With +200 improved relations and +25 gifts, the highest I was able to get was 187, when I need 190 to start integrating them.

Is there anything I am missing to get the relations any higher? Their only rival is Shun (Probably because there isn't too much around that isn't me) which I rivaled but isn't giving me the enemy of enemy opinion modifier. Any small trick would be greatly appreciated.

Shared wars are always good. With Japan it might be tough to get things like "defended our territory" or "returned our land" bonuses if their territory consists of only the Japanese islands. If they have cores in Korea or Manchuria, then fight a common foe, allow the enemy to occupy the Japanese territory, and then liberate with your army.

You might also be able to improve relations with the ideas which give a bonus to diplomacy.

The best option is to put your diplo working: choose an enemy of them, put him as an enemy of yours in the diplo screen, and soon you will have a +20 bonus, enough to annex them. There is no need to attack the enemy, just select him as enemy.

Like I said, I did that, and it strangely has created no opinion modifier.

I got to over 200 with wars, but I didn't get "Fought to the end" or "Fought in War" afterwards, just "In War Together" which obviously ended as the war ended, and I can't start integrating while at war.

The only thing I can think of is the +Relations ideas? That might push me over the edge.

Would a guarantee work? I can't remember if you can guarantee vassals/PU's but if you can thats an extra +10 IIRC

You can do this only before, not after. The same thing can be done with military access. If you do this before, it stays. I think, it's an bug/exploit.

Otherwise:

You can destroy a rebel stack in their territory for +10 opinion. Relations doesn't affect the opinion of a country.

Legitimate bonuses

Defended territory (+10): Kill a rebel stack.
Liberated province (+10): Lift a siege.
Declared war on rival (+25): Self explanatory.
Conquered rival province (+25): Self explanatory.

Circumstantial and exploity bonuses
Returned territory (+40): Use Return Core in a peace deal on their behalf.
Gave territory in peace (+20): Cede an enemy province they have a claim on in a peace deal on their behalf.
War subsidies (+15): Give war subsidies right before the end of a war. Wait until you have two free diplomats ready again. Pause the game, submit peace offer with Diplomat 1 (on a day that is not the last of a month), unpause for one day, then ask for integration.
