My problem is i cant reach the required 190 relation. I can just reach 185 (arghhh¡) and that giving the lots of money to get the maximun bonus of +25 for a state gift and sending a diplomat to get the maximun bonus also. The penalties are: heretic country (they are protestant while i am catholic) that gives minus 40. Then having a casus belli against them, because i am playing as Spain and i have the colonial conquest cb permanently. And then being a great power competitor, which gives minus 25. Any way to get relations up to 190?

Thank you

Return him some provinces, if possible. I've seen AI Spain doing it in one of my games (and ragequit I did after that, because Spain already had Portugal, Aragon, Naples, Brittany, Savoy annexed/inherited...).

Convert for a second and start integrating - huge stability hit but works. Or try not to border them anymore if you can - the -40 for neighbouring heretic become -20 or something. Or hope for a positive event that increases relations - too random for me.

Military Access.

Guarantee them.

If you haven't already, try choosing rivals that are also their rivals. This should give the "Enemy of my enemy" bonus that slowly ticks up.

Do you people even play this game? Not a single one of those can be done on a junior partner after the fact. Rivaling doesn't work. You can guarantee them before forming a PU, but it will expire long before integration is possible. You cannot give access to a vassal or junior partner after forming either, though if you granted it beforehand, it will stay.

Then having a casus belli against them, because i am playing as Spain and i have the colonial conquest cb permanently.

No, that's from them having a casus belli against you. Since a vassal or junior partner always has "independence" CB, you cannot ever remove that -15.

You're not out of luck :)

There's at least one bonus that's been missed so far, and works with PU minors.
Declared War On Enemy, +10.

Check out your PU-minor and see who his Enemies are. Not Rivals, but Enemies - i.e. the nations who have rivalled him.

Declare war on any one of those nations, and you get the +10 which decays -1 a year. Of course you need to finish the war before you then Integrate them, but as long as you can do that in fewer than 5 years, you'll still have the required +5. You might need to top up Improve Relations now and then to ensure it doesnt dip below 200, ditto gift.

How to further boost relations with subject: via war.

By rival province you mean a province from one of the gb rivals?

Yes. With one war, you should be able to combine three or even four bonuses, so long as GB's rivals and enemies overlap, as they often do.

You could get a total of another +70, from one war:
  • Check their Rivals and Enemies, and find a nation that is both a Rival and an Enemy, and whom you can DOW and beat fairly easily.
  1. DOW their Enemy, and you instantly get Declared War On Enemy, +10.
  2. Allow enemy troops to infiltrate the subject's territory. As soon as one of them is being sieged, go attack the enemy there, and you get Defender Our Territory, +10.
  3. If the siege completes, and the province falls to the enemy, that's even better. Go kill the enemy while it's in another of the subject's provinces, to get the Defended bonus. Then re-capture the sieged province, to get Liberated our Province, +25.
  4. At the end of the war, annex a province from any nation that is a Rival of your subject, to get Conquered Rival Province, +15.
  5. Finally, at the end of war you will get Fought To The End, +10.
Totalling +70.

There is a further, juicy, bonus available if your subject nation has any cores owned by other nations, whom you can DOW and force to Return Core. This gives: Returned Core To Me, +40 - per province! You can push relations to max +200 with this, in the right circumstance.

If you got very lucky and were able to DOW an enemy who was an Enemy, Rival, and who had cores of your subject, you could get +110 for a single returned province, or any amount higher if there's more to Return. Of course that will be pretty rare. But it's worth noting that if your subject does have cores out there, it's probably worth just going for Returning those Cores and not bothering about an Enemy/Rival war; +40 is probably enough on its own. Then again, if the subject still has other cores out in the world you can Return, why would you want to integrate them yet? :)

That's a lot available! So prioritise what you need. One might want to not bother with Conquered Rival Province as that requires annexing and AE.

And Liberated Our Province, although it's the largest modifier at a juicy +25, might also be a lower priority because it requires letting the enemy win a siege against your PU-minor, which might be tricky and time consuming if the PU-minor and your other allies keep fighting him. Though you might get lucky and find the PU-minor attaches its armies to yours, and so you can decide whom to attack or not, and allow their provinces to fall so you can re-take them.

With +70 available without cores, or +110 available with Return Cores, it should be easy to get the +25 or +30 anyone might need in any given circumstance. Or get more to give yourself a buffer, so that it doesn't matter if Improve Relations drops a little below 200, or even if a Gift expires.

Note that for the Rival-specific bonus, Conquered Rival Province, it only requires that you go to war against a Rival; not that you actually DOW'd that Rival. So if you can't find a nation that is both an Enemy and Rival of your subject, but there's an Enemy who has an ally who is a Rival, then that works too, so long as you can annex one of their provinces in a resulting peace. Just make sure it's the Enemy you DOW, as the Declared War on Enemy only works for the nation you actually declare on.

Summary of subject nation relations modifiers obtainable via war.

I've updated my post above: How to further boost relations with subject: via war.

Following discussion in the Q&A thread, I realised that I had two modifiers too low, and missed Fought To The End completely. I've updated the post accordingly, and also generalised its content a little so it's more generally useful for future readers.

I have also now summarised them in this post for handy future reference - here's a summary of all the opinion modifiers one can get with a subject nation by going to war; preferably against a nation that is both their Enemy or Rival, or at least is an Enemy or a Rival.

List of Opinion Modifiers available with subject nations, via going to war:

Enemy/Rival means Enemy or Rival of your subject nation.

Enemy?Rival?ModifierModifierMaximumDecays /yrStacks?
YesDeclared War On Enemy+10None1Per war
Defended Our Territory+10+102No
Liberated Our Province+25+255No
YesConquered Rival Province+15None1Per province
Fought To The End+10+201Per war, max 2
Returned Core To Me+40None1Per province

Totals available:

DOW on:Total
Nation that is both Rival and Enemy:+70
Nation that is an Enemy+55
Nation that is a Rival+60
Nation that is neither+45

Note that where you DOW a nation with allies, you can still get the Rival-specific bonus as long as any of the allies is a Rival of your subject nation, and you annex a province from that Rival in a resulting Peace.

I have not included Returned Core To Me in these totals as that's only usable in very limited circumstances, and it's pretty unlikely you'll get a situation where you can DOW an Enemy/Rival who also holds cores to return. If you do get that situation, add +40 to the other totals!

Added Returned Core To Me, +40.

This is very situational and unlikely to apply in this situation, where you're boosting relations to integrate (why would you be integrating if you'd not Returned all the cores already?) But I've added it for completeness and future reference, as it is a nice bonus to have - on top of the obvious benefits of giving your subjects more of their cores.

Note that it's a per-province modifier, so you can boost relations hugely with this when your subject has a number of cores that can be Returned.
