Hi I've just started playing CK but in every scenario I play (as a count or duke) I always run out of money fast, especially when going to war against other provinces (the only way I can find of increasing the amount of land I have). Any tips for helping to fill the purse?

when you mobilze your army, it costs you to keep them on the field. Depending on your stewardship skills and richness of domains, the cost of fielding an army can (and usually do) exceed your income. My suggestion is
1. Keep wars short and sweet. As the Duke of Anjou, I only crusade when I have 4k gold+.
2. avoid fighting multiple enemies.
3. use the thesis-antithesis model. Build your economy, fight a war, build again, fight again.
4. marry people with high stewardship ratings, so your future king will hopefully be able to generate more income and field a larger army.

hope this helps

Well, ruler stewardship usually increases the size of armies greatly, and, in my experience, the upkeep for your entire force increases faster than your income.

You can always just lower your army maintanence to half, it doesn't have that horrible of an effect on your army as long as you aren't fighting someone that stands a chance against you (which you should never do anyway IMO). :D

thats true, but assuming he is fighting shorter wars, the higher stewardship rating should help to gather more funds during time of peace....

That's rather strange : the general consensus is that money is earned easily in CK.
Some tips :
Build some improvements in your provinces
Put in charge a good steward to help your ruler
Keep your wars short
Don't overextend your demesne

This depends on what part of the game he's in. In 1066 it's very easy to run out of money for a tiny count or duke. 200 years later (and when a human player most certainly will have expanded), all gold increasing multiplicative province improvements make sure that there is a lot more money to go around than at the start of the game.

That can be a problem at first (and maybe for a while) when playing the 1066 scenario. One way you can help yourself is start with a rich province or provinces. Some of the areas are "dirt poor", such As Ireland and Wales (and yet I always play them, I am a sucker for the Celts :D).

I would concentrate on slowly building up my demise, as there are a few improvements you can build right away. Also try expanding through marriage and inheritance. You may have to wait a while as you economy slowly improve before any military campaigns. A great steward is a big help here, never neglect appointing one and always look out for the best.

If you need to conquer (and who doesn't! ;) ) be sure to go after really small and easy targets to absorb into your realm, although you may have to spend time and cash to build up their economies also if you ever want them to contribute later, not to mention your own income since standing armies cost.

Just remember when you are at war you are usually losing income during the months of mobilization so bare that in mind, especially if you field all your troops, so always have a surplus beforehand. Needless to say, the more you have, the more it will drain your economy.

Only other way to make cash (other then events) is through taxes, tolls, and scuttage (and cutting back on church donations). Beware though, the more you tax, the more your people will be unhappy. High scuttage annoys vassals and does shrink the size of their regiments also. Also depending on your laws you can adjust the slider only so far one way or the other and changing the laws has their own set of risks.

My first game as King of Castile was a bummer. I could not make more than 8 gold per month so I was never in shape to confront my Muslim enemies.

As the duke on Anjou, i'm racking in about 100+gc per month in income during peace, and about -32 gc during war (only mobilizing own troops). got about 15k+ in reserve and don't know what to do with the $$$ (except use them as a bonus to boost loyalty)

oh, and the year is 1162.
