I'm playing a Suomenusko ruler in the 1066 start and the black death is rolling through in 1106 (delayed dynamic).

I can't shut the gates and my family is dying out! My character isn't doing anything but I don't meet the requirement "not feasting, hunting, travelling or other special activities".

Any ideas?

Update for anyone interested in what going through the plague without closing the gates looks like, I've gone through 8 sons and 5 wives. My current heir and only surviving male relative is 3 years old, so now I need to live to the age of 78 if I'm going to hold the republic.

With hunting focus and an experimental treatment from a 24 learning physician I survived myself (he made me run through the forests naked at night in the middle of winter).

However almost every patrician house except me is currently in regency, so this is going to be interesting....

Oh and I still can't shut the gates.

Only thing I can think of was a "Worship the gods" event for which I might not have got a response for - I think it was the prosperity one or long life. I just assumed the event didn't work/get rewarded etc.

Apart from that I was at peace when the plague hit, was rulership then went hunting as soon as the plague got closer but no hunting events IIRC. I tried to shut the gates at the same time.

I think there might be a carousing bug going on. A number of times I have accepted a carousing, saw all the events, only to see another like a carousing festival was starting again.

I guess my question is why should there be a requirement to not be busy at all? If a plague that's wiping out half the peasant population is rolling towards you, you haul ass to protect yourself and your family from it.

Is it exploitable or game breaking some how? Why not just cancel whatever event is progress - AFAIK most event chains don't really have a reward until their end or near the end.

I usually play Suomenusko Tribals or just pagans overall.

I have never had the opportunity to shut the gates, I thought it is working as intended as I am tribal and only feudals could do that.

Now thinking about, it might be a bug. It is a bug that has been in the game for a long time, though. Just like shattered retreat enabling itself after loading a saved game.

Tribals cannot shut the gates. The bugs I've seen discussed effect merchant republics and sometimes glitched "still feasting" situations.

I've experienced this in a couple of games, including my current one. The notifier at the top of the screen pinged saying I could shut the gates, and there's an epidemic in an adjacent county to my capital, but the "Shut the Gates" option in the Intrigue panel is greyed out.

My character is set to carousing, although he has no active carousals, if that might be related somehow.

Is this a game bug then?

Any workarounds if it is, such as forced console commands to shut the gates?

Well, I've continued playing and it's eighteen months later now. Fortunately, the epidemic didn't make it on to my land, but is still raging in adjacent counties.

I still can't close the gates. Looking at my character's profile, there's a "Carouser, Diplomacy +1 bonus" underneath his stats that appears to be separate from the carousing +3 focus bonus. I haven't had any successful carousing invitations for many years, but may have invited people for carousing and got turned down perhaps two or three years previously.

So my theory is that the invitation to feast decision gives the player an additional bonus, whether successful or not, and this bonus is bugged by lasting too long. Or, alternatively, the close the gates decision is bugged by being too sensitive and counting any carousing bonuses as meaning the character is out carousing, whether he/she's actually doing carousing/feasting events or not.

I've loaded up a couple of old saves to see if I can find out what's going on. Firstly, changing from the carousing focus to something else and fast-forwarding a few months did not make the "Carouser, Diplomacy +1 bonus" go away. And still I couldn't shut the gates.

Secondly, the "Carouser, Diplomacy +1 bonus" appears to be gained at the conclusion of a successful feast. It's separate from the "Preparing a small feast" and "Carousing" modifiers, which both show a time limit.

So maybe the "Carouser, Diplomacy +1 bonus" is a permanent bonus for the character? And this conflicts with the shutting the gates rules.

So either its a bug, or you accept that choosing the carousing focus permanently turns a character into a party animal to such an extent that their desire to party outside the castle walls, and thus leaving the gates open, is greater than their concern for their family and subjects.
