Help! Game will not save AoD v1.07

I just installed Arsenal of Democracy v.1.02 from Gamer'sGate. Then I serially installed all the patches starting with 1.03 thru to 1.07. After each new patch was installed I checked that the game started and mostly to learn the various 4-letter codes that relate to each different version. I ended up with version 1.07 (MZJY) which I was hoping would happen.

But now playing the game it could not auto-save first month. Says: "Critical error: Couldn't open file:scenarios/save games/auto save.eug".

I can initiate a manual save, but it never completes (computer hour glass just keeps running).
When I do manual save, I see first item in the Saved Games list is (..) Not good!

What is my best remedy? Uninstall, and re-install?
If re-installing, do I need to install patches 1.03 to 1.06 if I only want 1.07, or can I just go straight to 1.07? My eventual plan is to add THIRD REICH MOD.

Also, I understand there is a Version 1.08 (but don't see it in my games account).

Which of all the AoD versions is the least problematic? I read somewhere somebody said "No point patching past 1.04". Is that true?

Aside from needing 1.07 if wishing to play THIRD REICH MOD, I might just use Iron Cross instead if it will run with 1.04 (should that be the recommendation for least problematic version). Basically, I like AoD a lot (had it couple years ago but can't remember what version that was) and just want to add either THIRD REICH or IRON CROSS for a change and improved map. But first I need to get my Vanilla game to save properly or I won't be playing at all.

If you have never played AoD before I advise you play as Germany on 'vanilla' 1.07 to first get the hang of it as that mod is extremely challenging as Germany. (look at my current AAR with the link on my signature as an example )

win 7? start game as administrator (you dont have to install all of patches, the last one is enough)

Thanks. I am the ADMIN (but not a very capable one!). I just tried opening the game from Programs instead of the short cut, and same problem. So, I uninstalled. It was listed twice in Programs, once with no size indication. I deleted both. Funny thing was the one with no size indicated took much longer to delete. Neither, of course, refers to the manual, which is saved elsewhere. I'll start over and just go straight to 1.07 patch. This time I'll make sure every other program I'm using is closed while I download. Maybe that was it as I had Internet Explorer open while I downloaded last time.

No luck installing

Think I need some "bread crumb" tips here, PLEASE. No luck. Should I SAVE, or SAVE AND RUN? It also bothers me that at no time between starting download and being able to play the game does it request entry of the serial.

This time I deleted all the temp files too as it didn't even go through a proper download progress bar.
Initial problem is that computer doesn't like the unknow publisher and recommends deleting or cancelling the download. Of course I instruct, "Download anyway".

Will try again. Any info/ advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

And of course, my Explorer needs to be open to do the download. So that was NOT the problem first time. Silly of me to have even mentioned that.

Do you have an "aggressive" Anti-Virus-Program? Maybe making an exception for the save folder or even the hole AoD folder may help.

I use Kaspersky. Being Russian, it's probably aggressive! No prob, I can turn it off for the download.

I just got all the AoD files deleted from temp files. Needed a restart to do it. But thought that best. First window that came up upon re-starting was STEAM - even though I was no where near that. Was not really sure about something wierd that happened when I installed that just before I began downloading AoD earlier. But because its window came "out of the blue" I uninstalled that program too. I feel the computer is clean now to try again. This time I'll just RUN + SAVE AoD 1.02 and play test it to see if it saves before I add patch 1.07. Will advise when done. THANKS!

I use Kaspersky. Being Russian, it's probably aggressive! No prob, I can turn it off for the download.

ONLY PARTIAL SUCCESS. I managed to successfully download AoD v1.02 and played a month. It auto-saved and I could do manual saves just fine.

Then I downloaded and installed the patch 1.07 from my Gamer'sGate account and now the game won't save. Any ideas? I had my anti-virus off for both downloads and installs. The gane is (MZJY) which I am glad that's right.

I wish I could upload the screen shot I did, but can't figure out how to do that either since I can't seem to browse to my desk top where the jpeg sits. It says I can not post attachments. How do I get that sorted out? I'm planning an AAR but need real computer technology now before I can even get started! The "Image icon" above where I'm typing here says "Add an image from URL". I don't want to add from some URL, I want to browse to my desk top, but suppose I could publish the image to my website first so I would have a valid URL to refer to. Surely there must be a simpler way to put up screen shot!

Anyway, the error when trying to save with 1.07 installed reads, "Couldn't open files/scenarios/save games/USA_1936_January_1.eug" or whatever other date I'm trying to save.
The dialogue window asks if I want to continue and presents 3 buttons ABORT, RETRY and IGNORE. All 3 buttons are inactive but I can clear the dialogue window by hitting ENTER.

After the initial download of 1.02 I copied the file from the downloads folder into another document folder as was advised. That was when I noticed I actually have 2 identical size files of HoD that were created with the first download of 1.02. I only downloaded it once so why I got 2 files (each 284 kb)?
One is called: Download Arsenal of Democracy- A Hearts of Iron Game (1)
The other is called: Download Arsenal of Democracy- A Hearts of Iron Game
These two files have an icon of a white G on a black background with a small blue/yellow shield. Not sure what those 2 icons are for since they are not the game.
I also have 1 file only called: ArsenalOfDemocracy107 which is 365MB and is the actual game.
And I have the temporary folder: GamersGate temporary files


PLEASE HELP! I think there must be something wrong with that Version 1.07 sitting in my Gamer's account.

I did not replace ANY exe files. I downloaded 1.02 once and got into my DOWNLOADS folder four (4) files:
1. The temporary
2. The game at 365MB
3. Two extra identical files (the black G on white background icon) of only 284KB.

At this point game saved OK.

After I added patch 1.07 it doesn't save any more.


OK I'll look into the files to see if I notice anything wrong in the scenarios/save games folder.

AAH HAA! save game is written as 2 words, with a blank space. Must it not be ONE? I can easily re-name it. Inside the folder is a temp file which is a blank note pad (0 KB). Should the correct filename be savegame or save_game ? PLEASE ADVISE. Thanks!

Does the 1.07 download come with an exe file? It if does, I'd recommend replacing the 1.02 exe with the 1.07 one. For me the 'save games' name works fine, it doesn't need to be 1 word.

1) try to start aodgame.exe with admin rights - right click on file and choose "run as administrator"
2) Deinstall game again and reinstall outside of c:\program files in a folder like C:\AoD

On Vista/Win7 admin and admin rights are two different thing for programs in UAC protected folders. Even as Admin user you don't have all admin rights for programs in those folders.
That's why I suggested to reinstall outside of program files so you'll also find savegames inside the program folder and not somewhere under my documents in virtual storage.

Yes, i am also using win 7 and just start game as admin, so i did not face above problem
