I'm playing Austria circa 1600: Venice accepts peace with my demand for a 1000d tribute -- but then only 130 ducats or so are added to my treasury.

I've reloaded and tried it again and again, demanding different amounts; but in every case, I end up receiving only a random tiny fraction of the ducats I successfully demanded. Why why?

Also: I simply can't do anything to get the option to militarily annex Venice. The "forced annex" option is on (and I know it's working because I've just recently force-annexed Milan). I have long since conquered all of Venice's provinces; and then I waited more than five years before going to war again. I demolish the fortress in Venice itself; but I am never given the option to annex it.

please help! thanks much! I love this game!

Hi Wretched Gnu, welcome to the board.

The reason that you only receive 130 ducats is because that's all the money that Venice has. You might notice this when you are losing a war and, for peace, your enemy asks for 18 ducats. Your enemy is asking for more ducats but the 18 ducats is all you have in your treasury. That's all you have to give.
Paradox made it this way to stop a possible cheat that a player might try, by forcing small defeated nations to take loans to pay off peace demands. A player could get rich if they abused that.
I feel your pain with Venice:(. With original EU you can't annex any of the big countries. There are scenarios posted that enable you to annex anyone you like. The IGC v2.3, plus our group leader Yoghurt (den spider:p) has quite a few good scenarios at his web site.

ah yes...!

I see, thank you very much, I wouldn't have thought of that. I just got used to thinking of Venice as perpetually rich...

and, yes, I knew you couldn't annex "major" countries, I just didn't realize Venice was one of them (no offense, fellow Itals...! venice will always be 'major' in my heart.)

Did I mention how much I like this game? I'm one of those who really likes the Civ series -- but EU really is the direction future strategy games should take. I would love to see a game like EU that has some of the resource gathering and allocation choices you see in Civ.

The truly great thing about this game is the balance between the historical restraints inherent in the game (the hard, "arbitrary" rules) and the vast, unforseen effects a player can have on the globe. The result is a European world that remains hauntingly familiar and altered.

thanks again...

A tip.... if you wanna gain as much gold as possible from your opponent in a peace settlement, then you should offer him the peace right after the year changes, then he has his coffeins full of gold and havent spend them on troops and such trying to defend his nation :) Offering him peace in December, November never pays of good... ;)

It is also the case that if you have allies the money you get is divided between them and you equally.

And a warning: if you think you can avoid paying money by spending money while a peace treaty has been offered by the AI and then accept it, think again... you will end up with taking a loan to make up for the difference.

e e e xcellent... [fingers tented]

tasty... so does anyone have any other devious and/or otherwise useful advice about how to reduce the occurrence of crashes-to-the-desktop? It never used to happen when I was first playing the game; but the last few sessions, I've crashed four or five times.

There's no consistency in terms of what was going on in the game at the time -- last time, in fact, nothing was happening; I was just staring at the screen, thinking, as the clock was humming along. Twice it occurred when I attempted to "offer peace" from the window you get when right-clicking a country....

What update version do you have? The latest update is 1.10. You can check by looking at the upper left corner of your game start screen.
If you need to update, click on the download thingee at the top of this page. It'll take you to the download page. Look for Europa Universalis. Choose which 1.10( NA is for North America) you need.
Sometimes the game crashes on me too. I've learned that you gotta manual save often, esp. after good events;) I wouldn't depend on the auto-save too much!

as long as I'm not alone...

yeah, I made sure to download 1.10 first thing... I suspect the problem is partially my laptop, which is just barely able to run the game well. I'm actually looking forward to EU2 coming to the Mac by year's end: then I can play on my wife's new ibook. She'll never see it again....

and note that even with Venice as a minor, you need to conquer ALL provinces before you can military annex. There may be a few spots of green floating in the Mediterranean...

good point Yogurt! that never occurred to me:)
If I wanted cash I would raise war taxes just before the endo of the year to get 150% the usual year end taxes;)
