Probably a strange question, but I am setting up a custom nation, which is a Dutch Republic. The points spent on leader attributes of course affect the initial leader, although the impact is limited due to the four year terms.

However, it is also possible to spend points on an heir, but I am curious whether these points are totally wasted, whether they are applied to another candidate in the next election, or perhaps to a candidate available in the future.

Very interesting and helpful. After reading the wiki, the mechanics of this are not entirely clear, although it appears that if I plan to go Orangist, I might be smart to have Republican tradition as one of my country's ideas. Unless I plan to eventually switch to Monarchy.

But I still wonder whether spending points on an heir will affect anything. It appears that an Orangist leader would serve for life, but would his heir then be a candidate?

actually no... there is not so many things to drain your republic tradition... just start as statistan once you reach 100 republic change to full orangist

Dutch Republic doesn't have heirs. In game mechanics terms, the main difference between Statists and Orangists is that the former want to choose a ruler for a strictly limited term (no re-elections allowed) and the latter want him to rule for life (like a historical Doge of Venice - forget the 'quasi-monarchical' fluff). The term length is determined by which faction is in power, not which faction the candidate supports. As a fun little perk, you're allowed to make royal marriages, which can give some PU opportunities if you're Christian, but the ability to impose PUs should not be confused with dynastic government.

FWIW I'd stand clear of the Dutch Republic government for a custom nation. On paper it's great in that you get some bonuses and can pick your monarch. But too often you're choosing between two garbage rulers with the Orangists are in power, and the max absolutism is trash.

When playing as Holland you're better off sticking with a monarchy, which has better absolutism and the ability to disinherit heirs you're not happy with.

Yeah, dutch republic sort of lacks the pros of both monarchies and republics...

Dutch republic is not so bad, at least in terms of mana generation.
If both heirs suck you make sure to keep the statists in power and you will have another election in four years. Then when you get a great ruler you keep the orangists in control and you'll have a ruler with good stats until death.

The reduced absolutism is obviously an unfortunate disadvantage shared with all other republics.
