Hegemon is irrelevant: only plays to late-late-late-game, when such bonuses don't matter

Empire was supposed to make that crucial empire period of the game more fun. But Hegemon bonuses are so late that they would only apply when you already rule the world and don't need them. I played as Austria, had all of Poland, most of Lith, all Denmark, most of Sweden, most of European Ottos, had super-Spain in a PU, owned the entire Indian coast and most of Malacca, and vassalized the entire HRE. I had about 4 times the dev of any other country. I did not get any of the Hegemon bonuses quite yet (while granted I could have taken economy ideas and wasted a slot to get there. But meh, that's not fun, that's detracting in one area to add in another.

Rather than give us stuff to do while building an empire, it just puts a really dumb carrot at the supposed end of that gameplay. But by the time you get there, you're already lost in micromanaging a empire. Empire, based on the advertisements, was about making the game more playable after that Empire stage. It kicks in far too late.

While the added mission trees are good, that is not something that had to be a DLC feature. That's very easily programmable and could have been added anytime. Many of the little bonuses on that tree aren't that significant anyway. THe mission tree stuff is good, but I don't love that Austria gets all these amazing claims across the world so easily, supercharging the advantages of already strong countries while often not giving much to the others.

Controlling twelve island provinces I was able to be Naval Hegemon as The Knights by 1700, and in another game where I played tall Switzerland with 52 provinces I was Military Hegemon by 1750. In both games I wasn't really trying to reach Hegemon as I was role-playing for the most part so I could have had these Hegemonies much earlier. Based on that experience I would have to say the Hegemonies seem to acheive the purpose of being a fun goal to strive for as the Age of Absolutism and Revolution kick into full swing.

that's interesting! I thought about doing some runs trying to achieve hegemony with minimal number of provinces
