I'd consider the maus to be a technological step BACKWARD in armor-development during WW2.
I mean, the old mobile fortresses of WW1 were obsolete.
The germans were the ones who started to drive the thought of fast moving armor for spear-heads... and still they revert to the obsolete thinking at the end...

silly germans :)

Mouse of course was stupidity, but from 1943 Germans was mainly defending and they created more and more heavier tanks and SPA becouse it was nessery to survive longer. Better AT weapons, CAS planes, enemy stronger tanks like T-34/85 was so deadly and they have no other alternative ... Look at modern tanks - they are like a fortress.

Look at modern tanks - they are like a fortress.
With the main difference that modern tanks got, good reliable engines, support and logistic organisations that work, air support, and a real and serius thought by the developers when it comes to the fire/protection/speed ratio, and most of all, they got real doctrines and training developed for the specific models.
The maus would not have any of this if it ever would have come in to production.

Saw a documentary recently about armour and was impressed : cross-country speed of modern tanks is often a lot higher than road-speed of those of WW II

This has all reminded me of the "My tank is Fight" series from ************** They're putting out a book: http://www.**************.com/booklist/index.htm

But I remember they detailed a conceptual German super-tank dubbed the "Ratte". It had two naval guns and a cruiser turret on it. It was supposed to be something like 5 stories tall. The whole series covered a bunch of wacky German super-weapons and moved on into Allied and Russian stuff too. All excellent for WW II addicts.

I am not talking about a few build Mouses but about Tiger, PzKpfw VI "Königstiger" and Anti-Tank JagdPanther and JagdTiger.
They allowed to fight on long distances and destroy enemy tanks before they even close to them. It was the weapon to fight Russian T34/75, T34/85 or KW series.

All of them was one of the best weapon in II war. In some of them Germans use infrared systems.

One would assume that had the Germans not been in such a desparate situation the (huge) kinks in the Maus would have been worked out with time before it was fielded.

Do you have stairs in your house?

A lot of people here take the internet way too seriously and are offended and crybabyish over SA.

Arg, the My Tank is Fight series is so cool. If anyone's interested just stick "something awful" minus the space, into the **** in the URLs up there.

Oh, and I am indeed protected, as you probably have already guessed.

Some of the modern tanks can reach speeds of 60 MPH.

Wrong ... again :p
Russia and germany are on the same plate, and moving entirely towards the east. So they couldnt drift away, unless a new convection current apears between the maus and moscow.

Hmmmm two inches a year is average for a plate anyways...I wonder how th MAUS could have kept up.

In fact they are in different dimensions. T34 in german use for example had 10km/h average marching speed due to engine cooldown time, overhaul time etc. Todays engines are much more reliable, far exceeding the difference on papers.

What's the use of notoriety if you can't capitalize on it?
