Wouldn't that mean you have to build much, much more AAA to get the same effect? Instead of level 10 AAA in a line from Holland down to France, protecting all of the industrial cities, Berlin and whatever else is behind, now Schweinfurt, Berlin, Hamburg, etc. all need to have their own level 10 AAA. So instead of a bomber stream overflying X flak guns, they now only overfly Y, which is 10 or fewer.

A mission profile before would be Takeoff > Channel > Detected by radar > Coastal Flak > Main Defensive line > Target and returning through the same, taking losses all the while. I suppose lighter losses over the coast, many losses on the main defense, and losses over the target depending on the target's own defense. This means that over the course of the mission the bomber stream is losing aircraft almost the whole time, at variable amounts, and that any German city behind the line is still defended by those initial defenses.

Now, it would appear that only the province's own AAA is used. This represents fewer defenses total and also a shorter engagement time, since the aircraft are only engaged once they are already over the target. This also means that instead of say 200 provincial AA with 10 level 10 provinces as the flak belt (100 units), and the remaining 100 dispersed throughout, every potential target would need to be covered individually, meaning more guns, but less opportunity to fire.
Maybe they can work in a code that will allow you some selection of where your fixed AAA is defending. Like cities/industrail or a formal line so it cannot be flown around like cities can be.

If you can turn off the 3D models what replaces Planes and ships ?

If you can turn off the 3D models how do you tell in what direction a Division is moving, must you mouse over, drag a box or click on the Division?

Is there a top down view when zoomed in ?

Is there a latency camera that you can turn on and off ?
I'd assume similar to HOI3, a colored arrow pointing in one of 8 directions.

If I had to guess, I would say the logic behind using the Japanese War Flag is to model the militaristic Japanese society and culture at the time. Although, if it is a big deal to some people, Paradox games have always let you easily mod flags without it affecting the checksum. I know I'll be doing that to get the historic German flag.

Is it just me or is it hard to see who is the winner in that naval combat report?
I honestly don't know who won this battle. Apparently it was a defeat for the player who got this report, so it could be U.S., but I honestly don't know. What am I missing?

I also miss some info there. Like how many ships or planes were lost. Instead I just see damage done. Is that info hidden there? (it seems you can scroll through it on both sides, so maybe it's just not viewable in this screenshot)

Or instead of having just Defeat or Victory, it would be great to have Defeat for Nation, Victory for Nation.

Just my 2 cents.
The equipment BELOW the surface of the ocean is destroyed.

@podcat Just want to say that the Hearts of Iron IV team is really amazing. As someone fascinated with World War II history, this is just fantastic. The blend of historical realism (the factory system is just awesome; I never thought of it, but that's a much better model for production!) and gameplay balance really makes this look like one of the best strategy games I've ever seen. The Manpower update with the navies and air force is also legit.

Thanks a ton for the hard work!

I did have a few questions about this Dev Diary, but I've forgotten them. Sometimes, I regret choosing to become a mathematician :p

Cheers for the DD Podcat, and congratulations on having the release candidate locked in, I'm sure it's even more exciting for you than it is for all of us :D. Love the changes as well - manpower for aircraft and ships is huge and quality, straights changes are tops and more naval detail is something I'd never complain about ;). Big props on making it possible to toggle the models on and off as well. Suspect I'll play with the models myself, but much respect for looking out for those folk who prefer not to :).

yeah isnt it epic?!

Damn straight :). I'm looking forward to swapping out my hammerhead alien for my general or admiral of choice, and seeing the forums more generally covered in military leaders .

Who said aliens cannot be generals or admirals ? Haven't you played Stellaris ?

PS I would like to lead UK armies as sir Basil Bertram.

I intend on using the sprites to the fullest, but I respect the work put in for those who would rather not. Props to the Art Team, as I feel like they don't get nearly the respect they deserve with all of the hard work they put into making that possible. It looks like a big change from HoI3, and I can only imagine the back and forth on how exactly to model these to get the right feel.

Thanks a lot, guys - I'm so excited!

I appreciate the fact that someone has disagreed with my last post, despite it being true. I'd love to see how people reacted to Paradox deciding to use various naval and war flags for every nation, but apparently it's okay for Japan.
Any, no matter how small, criticism against Paradox, always get dislikes, just the way the forums works.
