I just noticed the top bar from the Map screenshot and the tech screenshot has changed. The raised fist is gone replaced by a building facade it makes one go hmmm?

I like the new production model tied to the tech tree at least from the aspect of tanks, planes and ships. But how is this going to be modeled for infantry, I am no military historian, but even a novice like myself looking at a superficial wikipedia entry realizes that the major countries fielded largely different infantry. For example, Germany focused heavily on machine guns and AT weapons that were common in most infantry divisions. However, the USSR fielded largely a rifle based infantry with limited AT or MG capability. Japan focused on mines as a AT weapon--as opposed to the American Bazooka or the German Panzerfaust, Japan utilized grenade launchers over mortars.

My question is, will this be modeled in the game at some level? or is it just going to be abstracted as infantry small arms? I would hope that given the production system some level of detail can be applied to the different construction of the various countries infantries. I would like to have to make choices between producing, 100,000 Panzerfausts, 100,000 Mortars, or 100,000 MG42. Secondly if we do have this level of specialization how will it be handled in combat? How is combat going to work when a German Division that includes MG42s, and Panzerfausts comes up against a Russian Rifle division?

I would expect that the infantry tech would work similar to the tank tech. Each tank in the screenshot has 4 subtechs that fill very different roles. Maybe infantry will have some similar system that at least sort of address your issue. Alternatively, this issue could maybe be addressed by the doctrines in addition to or along side subtechs.

As far as "Japan focused on mines as AT" type thinking goes... since the tanks are essentially the same from nation to nation, infantry will probably be the same way. If a diversity of infantry based AT methods (for example) is in game, it probably won't matter much what nation you're playing.

Are we talking something like how National Ideas work in EUIV, where there's a few 'focus' nations, and the rest get more generic tech trees?

I think it's mostly because most nations didn't have any tanks, or only foreign tanks during the timeframe.

You could try to represent the Venezuelan tech tree with as much detail as possible, it'd still be pretty baren.

But the differences between a 30mm armoured and 37mm gunned Panzer 3 C and a 70-80mm armoured and long 50mm gunned Panzer 3 L ARE massive. That's the difference between French Suomas running rampant through fields of knocked out Panzer 3s, and the other way around. Same for a short barreled Panzer IV C or D being basically useless in tank v tank combat, and a long barreled one being quite capable at it, or a Panzer IV C being easy meat for Polish AT gunners, where a Panzer IV H would deflect 37mm rounds with ease. Making it a generic representation eliminates the ability to show real technological research and the race between tank and anti-tank combat.

One is Basic Medium Tank and one is Improved Medium Tank. Boom done.

Again, the model names are flavor. Use your imagination. Your 1939 Basic Medium Tank Battalion has 3 companies of PzIIC and PzIII E and one of PzIV D, your 1941 Improved Medium Tank Battalion has 3 companies of PzIII L, M, and N and one of Pz IV F1, F2, and G.

In-game, these tank levels are nothing more than a chunk of stats that contribute to a division's overall stats. They will never exist without benefitting from stat boosts from infantry, artillery, and AT battalions. Getting late PzIV Gs instead of Ds is going to be represented by +1 hard attack if it's included at all.

Maybe someone can make a Panzersperg mod where all battalions but armor are eliminated and the entire tech tree is just dozens of slight tank variations, to represent the fictional WW2 that exists in the heads of amateur armchair historians where every battle consists of tanks engaging eachother with no support on flat fields.

No Landkreuzer P. 1000 Ratte or Landkreuzer P. 1500 Monster? Y.Y haha. Would be nice to have insane options to make monster tanks and Artillery weapons as Germany.

That will be represented by a decision event tree. When you start the decision you get a drain on IC. Two years later you are told that the prototype is unworkable.

Why settle for a landkreuser ? they should allow us to put tank tracks on a bismarck class BC B)

This is exactly what I imagined the tech system could become --- where you two different nations having similar tech levels each has tanks and other equipment that sometimes can have very different stats.

In HOI3, a nation with all Armored related techs at 'Model 1940' will have an armored unit with the exact same perimeters as another nation's also with their techs at "Model 1940". With this, I think it will be a lot more flexible depending on each nations specific theories.

I was initially excited by the prospect of specific equipment production. Sadly this isn't quite how I envisioned it.

I imagined something more modular, similar to the manner in which ships in HoI3 are currently produced, right down to potential upgradability. There'd be clear combinations that represent exactly the primary production models and primary variants that were used. You'd mount x gun on y chassis with z suspension etc. However, you could, if you desired, try out some radical design that... quite frankly, might or might not work.

It's a bit sad to see the approach that has been taken instead, especially considering the fact likely only majors, as well as minors who did produce tanks like Czechoslovakia, will have "trees" representing the technology actually fielded. World War II was a time that all sorts of crazy ideas were tried out.... some of which worked, some of which were spectacular failures.... and some that were so absurd they never actually got tried. The system described here seems to shoe-horn you into historical models and not give you a chance to experiment.

Regarding upgradability, I don't imagine the sort of silliness that happens with HoI3 ships, just to be clear. I mean for instance examples where a specific model of tank might be pulled off the line and modifications made to it to produce something new (though historical examples usually happened in limited numbers).

It's a bit disappointing, really, because this idea could have been taken a much more interesting and much less restrictive direction.

I really like this idea of making the divisions battalion based and building equipment separate.

I do have a few questions however, though some may have been answered.

1. If you capture a more advanced design of something can you reverse engineer it and either get the equivalent design or gain experience towards your research?

2. Is there anything related trading of techs or gifting of techs to nations? The allies did share a fair bit of technology especially the commonwealth nations. I found in HOI3 it was hard to play a minor nation like Canada or Australia and field a comparable division to the British (in reality they did field comparable divisions) and keep it up to date because I didn't have the leadership to do the research, without sacrificing whole tech trees. Making the equipment separate does help solve this issue.

3. I assume you would be able to acquire equipment through some sort of lend-lease feature?

I know it's been brought up by others but I think it would be really nice if when you purchase/capture a tank of another nation it keeps it's name. For countries like Romania they used German, Czech, French and Soviet tanks. It wouldn't necessarily need to say that Romanian Battalion A has 45 Panzer V and 23 T-34. But if Romanian Battalion A could say it is fielding Panzer Vs that would be a step in the right direction.
