Just a thought; Are all variant stats simply linearly more effective the higher up you go, or will there be combinations or threshold values to consider? If for example you'd need a new fighter variant to tackle strategic bombing, you'd probably need a minimum engine strength to at all be able to reach their altitude. So variants with 0, 1 or 2 in engine upgrades might be around equally ineffective in intercepting bombers because they're beneath some threshold value in actually reaching necessary altitudes. Another example is making bad combinations of upgrades perhaps by up-gunning or up-motoring a variant without increasing reliability, resulting in a less effective overall variant from constant engine and weapon trouble.

It seems like it would be a bit more interesting to use if something like this was the case, and less obvious which was the ultimate configuration.

Just posting a movie from WW2 showing bombers. Its amazing what a true internet archive has and sad how much of our past history we are loosing.

This is a great idea - one of the Spitfire variants (the Mk XII, I think, one of the Griffin-engined Spits from our convo in the other thread) was developed specifically to counter an expected high-altitude German bomber. When the bomber never eventuated, they slowed production of that model and kept cranking out the IXs (I think, but one of the other more common models that had a lower ceiling).

No, the Strategic Region shown in the screenshot was Southern England, when GER occupied Northern France, Belgium etc. The SR is for targeting purposes. Deciding whether you can target that SR depends on the range of the planes.

We can assume there is a limit on the number of planes you can rebase to the airbases you capture in Northern France. But it would be unusual if an airbase existed, even bombed down to a low level if it had suffered alot of bombing before you captured it, and yet you could not send at least some fighters there.

However, I always felt it was not realistic that you could base medium or worse heavy bombers/transports at level 1 airbases. That level implies to me short grass runways, maybe not even completely flat, on a slight incline in hills and with minimal facilities. A forward air base, where small single engine planes can be located.

Only level 4 and above should hold medium bombers, say, and only level 8 for heavy bombers. They need concrete long and flat runways, and well developed facilities for the fuel and bombs to be stored, probably in underground concrete bunkers.

Some limit would also prevent you capturing a low level airbase and immediately rebasing bomber forces there, and considerably extending their reach into enemy territory. There has to be a delay before the airbase is repaired and brought back into full operation. And rebasing forces even with bases repaired to their maximum capability, should cause a delay before the planes are fully operational. It's not just the planes need to get there, but all of the ground support, equipment and specialist supplies, spare parts and workshops.
Thanks for the explanation!
Basing of planes has never been realistic in all of the HOI series. You could capture a level 1 base, and rebase 30 air units too it as soon as you took it over. The only effect was slow repair/org gains, no limiting factor for number of planes. One of the interesting "what-ifs" of WWII has always been to speculate over what the effect would have been of continued German assault on british air bases during the battle of britain. Hard to model in HOI.

Just a reminder that swastikas are not allowed on the forum. This includes swastikas in the context of films about fighting Nazis as well as pro-Nazi propaganda.

That film had some swastikas on the map of Europe. Keep in mind that lots of films made during the war have swastikas in them, including Disney films. Preview your movies before linking them.

But that morale loss and equipment requirement only work once. If Doolittle had run 100 raids from carriers, Japan wouldn't have surrendered.

That is exactly right. The first raid was a statement saying to Japan that they were not immune and could be hit too. After the first raid, the shock value would have been gone and there would be no real payout for the horribly inefficient expenditure.

Sorry about that. In case people wanted to know it was a US army film documenting the Memphis Bell which was the first US B-17 to complete 25 combat missions. It documented what happened during that historic mission and ended with the crew being decorated by the King and Queen of England. I in no way support the Nazism and am sorry for missing that symbol on the map.

How do we make dedicated night fighters/interceptors? I need to know how to counter the hordes of British heavy bombers I am expecting will be sent on raids over my country and want to have specialized interceptors against night bombing raids.

Maybe this video will give you some ideas on how to conter hordes of heavy bombers. And for the record that symbol is NOT in this video.

I'm kind of hoping that the variant system will be involved in specializing models, and not just having the abstraction saying that the fighters you build are all types of fighters, and that the variant system is just there to make more powerful fighters.

I believe this is the designers' intent. What players actually do with the tools provided may be another story altogether.

Assuming that night fighters are in they most likely will be medium airframes (the p 61 was a variant of the Lockheed Lightning fighter)

I've heard (on a paradox youtube video I cannot recall what it was) that there was a romanian aviation tech tree DLC planned. Is this still the case? If so, any place I can find out more information about it? I really want to blow russians with IARs :p
