All this laser talk gives me a simple mod idea - replacing default naval battle audio (will there even be one now? Or land battle sound for that matter?) with TIE Fighter engine and general Star Wars pew-pew laser sounds...

Actually I now want, nay, DEMAND a PDS Star Wars game. Because holy crap.

I'm willing to settle for Warhammer 40k.

40k is way cooler tho

40k is way cooler tho

A PDS dev said a nice thing about 40k! \o/ (And I agree.)

((Seriously, with the way Games Workshop is suddenly frivolous with their IP licensing... And PDS having waaay more cred than the studios that usually do these [mostly shovelware] 40k games... A man can dream.))

"Blood for the Blood God! And POPs for the Blood God! Oh, and silk or the Blood God! Err, and coal for the Blood God! Oh, and while you're out shopping, could you pick up some Rubber for the Blood God? Khorne says that the electric gear and automobile factories are starving for resources. We could also use some skulls for the skull throne, if Wal Mart has any..."

Your Majesty, Secret Master, I have been charged with informing you, terrified and on my trembling knees, that our RGOs produce only 1.29 skulls per day, while the throne, as you know in your omnipotence, requires at least 60. We believe that we will need armed men to extend our RGO to across the border, where there is still a population worth speaking of.

And Khorne, for the 453963rd time, wonders why the other Chaos Gods thought the Warp was a good place to be born, considering that 19th Century China would be a better temporal and geographical place to start conquering the universe as he starts justifying a CB on Manchuria....

I was always under the impression Khorne's success would entail having legions of guys just run amok and destroy everything like Kharn the Betrayer and his Gorechild regardless of whatever side you had them on. Kind of like leveling up to a point where it becomes risky to your own party like trying to manage war elephants. Imagine that type of logic in Magicka using certain strong combos too much your character goes berzerk!!

I hope there will be an ability to replay/rewatch naval engagements. Hoi4 looks like its becoming a really sexy game but at the same time with such a large strategy game you cant follow everything all the time so the ability to pause and watch a previous engagement would be something I'd really want!

there are some tidbits of info regarding convoy raiding / subs, but not the whole picture.

is this part of the game more or less done (in terms of mechanics)? Is there anything else you could share?

Most importantly, I understand that we will have individual ships now, instead of ship "units", meaning 1 sub will mean.. 1 sub. considering germany lost almost 800 subs in reality, I'm sure you have a way of doing things that wouldn't involve us manually replacing hundreds of subs? maybe setting up task forces that will patrol the provinces we set, which will replenish its losses so long as we keep on producing subs?

Doom stacks themselves make sense and are reallistic to some extend - just look at vast list of ships (on both sides) that participated in big battles in pacific.

Its combat mechanics that need to get more reallistic - especially carrier and submarine warfare.

I agree that the combat mechanics need work, but I never had trouble with the AI building doomstacks. This usually only happens with the USA so I simply avoid them and attack "targets of oportunity" to take-out their forward bases and sources of supply with multiple fleets. DO NOT GARRISON THESE ISLANDS and, eventually, the AI "realises" that it needs to be in more places at once. Once it splits its doomstacks to cover more area, you can use multiple smaller fleets in concert to combine your resources and defeat the AI's smaller fleets in detail.

Playing against human controlled USA is a little bit more difficult :)

One thing that wasn't covered yet, is land based plane effect.

1 - Can land based plane be assign to a theater for convoy raiding and assaulting fleet/lonely ships whith torpedo/bomb ?
2 - Can land based plane attack during a naval battle ?
3 - Can they do both while avoiding CV based plane ?

I would love while playing Germany to use a massive amount of long ranged bomber to harass the british navy, and maybe cover a Sea Lion operation by sinking the RN that would dare oppose me...

1 - I don't think you can assign an order to attack "lonely" or single ships only but there'll be some kind of "stance" that will allow your aircraft to break-off before loosing too much org if they encounter a large fleet. Of course, Germany would need to actually develop a credible airborne torpedo programme first, if you want to use them.

2 - Yes, this is shown in a screen-shot in one of the DDs.

3 - Well, yes, up to a point. We don't know yet how CV based aircraft work, but I doubt that you'll be able to avoid the defenders as it will be their specific duty to protect ships. They may be specifically protecting the fleet they are in though so, you should be able to attack other fleets/ships in the same area/sea zone without being intercepted all the time.

I'm sure Göring would have loved to use a massive amount of long ranged bombers to harass the British navy, and maybe cover a Sea Lion operation :)rofl:) by sinking the RN that would dare oppose him too.

Fortunately for the rest of the world, the Luftwaffe weren’t anywhere near up to the task. They performed particularly poorly during the Dunkirk evacuation, only managing to sink five destroyers with hundreds of tons of bombs and only managed to sink about 1% of the merchant ships passing through the English Channel. And most of those were lost to aircraft placed mines rather than bomb hits!

This is because his air force was particularly poorly suited to naval warfare due to inappropriate aircraft designs, lack of appropriate weapons and piss-poor or non-existent training in the techniques required. Manufacturing ten torpedoes a month & expending half of them in training isn't exactly an awe inspiring programme destined to rule the waves around England.

Now, a player should be perfectly able to expend the necessary resources & research to overcome these shortcomings, but at what cost to other, essential, areas?

Development of an aerial torpedo capability might put your tank research programme back a year. Can Germany afford that?
