no we arent doing weekly yet.
Sorry for the total unrelated question
What unites will be represented in-game with 3D models?
So far we have seen, infantry, tanks, fighters, bombers, convoys, "battle" ships, carriers and subs.
What about artillery, personnel carrier and cavalry troops?

Is anyone else disappointed in this month's DD? I feel like there hasn't been too too much new information.
I was looking forward to getting more news on convoy raiding. After all, the U-Boat menace was the most important naval facet in the Atlantic at least.

Well, you can't really talk in depth about convoy raiding without these two first DDs about naval warfare, I believe.
If you're saying that you want more info about anything, I'm right there with you :D

I'm just surprised to have read 2 DDs on naval warfare and pretty much nothing in them about convoy raiding. In the Pacific surface fleets were the major aspect, but in the Atlantic (slightly more important) it was all about convoy raiding.

I think convoy raiding doesn't get enough credit in the Pacific. The US had sank every japanese ship that floated by mid 1944. The collapse of the Japanese shipping network isn't given enough credit when talking about the Pacific War.

Thanks Podcat for this and all the other DD's. I am confident that HOI4 is in great hands as I truly enjoyed the later expansions of HOI3 (still play it!). I visited USS IOWA right after they opened her up to public visits, my 2nd time aboard as I once visited her in Norfolk when she (and I) were 'active' back in late 80's. Impressive ship indeed.

I have only a few comments for this thread, basically I remind all that this is a strategic game and the more 'tactical' stuff one throws into the mix the more unplayable it will become (as in micromanagement and computer resources). I roll my eyes when I see all these other missions people are asking for, keep it simple and the game will shine. This area system seems a great solution to the naval problems of the past HOI series. Looking forward to sinking many many Allied fleets and convoys,

Finally, take as long as needed to get this one right. I pre-ordered HOI3 and was playing it on release day. It was not ready and without extensive patches and user-mods to fix the AI.

Podcat when you say about shipping replacement equipment overseas, does this mean that equipment has a location, rather than just being in a pool, so if I built a factory in hong kong and had it pumping out small arms and trucks, would the hong kong garrison be able to reinforce directly from the production of this factory, or would they have to still be resupplied from abroard. When you say replacement equipment is that just shorthand for "supply to regain org/morale" or do tanks and such actually need to be shipped across the ocean to units to replace losses.

If that was the case, I suppose you could see units in cut off stalingrad having lost tanks replaced directly from T34s rolling out of the Stalingrad heavy industry.

That's a highly interesting question. Especially concerning the pool. So if there is something like a national pool for, let's say, the British Empire. Does that mean that all the stuff they produce, like oil from the Middle East, various resources from India and so on, lands in an abstracted depot in London from where it is transported to the factories and into your production system ?

Can a British tank division in Egypt resupply directly from the oil resources in a British occupied Iraq (if there are also refineries to turn it into fuel) or do they have to rely on a convoy coming in from the national pool in London ??

I know that the US used subs extensively. However, the US was also the much bigger player in terms of surface fleets. It was never going to be an even fight. The utilization of convoy raiding only accelerated the Japanese collapse. For some reason the Japanese felt submarines as convoy raiders weren't Samurai-honour-codex-stuff, but launching sneak attacks on Pearl Harbour and Singapore was cool...

In the Atlantic however, the U-Boats were a viable menace and the only weapon of the underdog Germany. Without U-Boats there wouldn't even have been a Battle of the Atlantic. So they were the major players in that theatre whereas in the Pacific they were a nice-to-have.

Japan did maintain a fleet of submarines, but half of them were intended for accompanying fleet actions, and only the other half were convoy raiders, hell, they even tried to make submergible seaplane carriers, I kid you not.

They didn't just try, they succeeded.

Much use the I-400s were.

Many of the Japanese submarines were used to cart odd-ball weapons around. From minisubs & floatplane scout/bombers to torpedo armed amphibious tanks.

Many more were built specifically to ferry supplies to beleaguered island garrisons. As I've said before, the IJN was obsessed with scouting and complex plans. Like being mobile refuelling stations for their big seaplane bombers or taking-out the locks of the Panama Canal.

With a handful of little floatplane bombers? Good luck with that.

If they had used their sub's for more conventional warfare & just sunk anything they saw... Hell, they had by far the best 21" torpedo (fastest, longest range, largest warhead, reliable detonator) in the world. Just very very poorly used.

And yeah, I am pretty-much with seattle on this.

Is anyone else disappointed in this month's DD? I feel like there hasn't been too too much new information.

A little disappointed. It may still be too early to get detail as they’re probably still hammering stuff down, but it’s supposed to be Alpha finished. Which means, if I understand the term at all, that its feature complete. So there shouldn’t be much in how things work that can actually change now.

PLease give us more on this.

Hey Podcast - I hoped you enjoyed your visit, and especially the weather in LA!

It's probably been said before, but if anyone's an heir to Johan's magic touch to developing grand-strategy games, you're the One. I read this DD and was immediately inspired again.

Something that just came to mind.
We know that aircraft and tanks are counted as they are, but is it the same thing with naval units? In previous games a submarine unit or a destroyer unit would represent a multiple, abstract number of vessels just like air wings represented 100 aircraft. How is it in HOI 4, when it comes to both production and actual deployment?

...
DDs are single ships. Currently everything is that isnt a transport, although we may change things before release. Strong large vessels can take more than one torpedo hit, but torpedoes are a bit random by nature. ...
