What are the golden four-leaf clover next to the ship icon ?
crew experience level.
First thing I'll do in HoI4 is:
Pick Germany, build a gazillion U-Boats and try to starve Britain before the US enters the war. This btw. is a perfectly possible strategy in "Darkest Hour" (with WiF2 mod at least). Nothing more fun than an all-out submarine tonnage war with detailled loss statistics.
If you look how the system work I don't think you need that many fleets, only one sub hunting fleet per zone.Is there going to be any effective way of managing large numbers of fleets? I didn't enjoy having to give each tiny sub pack or sub hunter fleet orders in Hoi3.
patrol: + chance of engagement, - combat efficiency
search & destroy: + combat efficiency, - chance of engagement
A has large fleet on "patrol", B has similar fleet on "search & destroy".
Won't that be a double negative for A? Not only will B have an advantage in a battle due to bigger fleet concentration, but A's "patrol" will also increase the chance of engagement even further!!
So you could only safely use "patrol" when you're sure that no large hostile fleet is around. Like the RN in the Atlantic knows that the Kriegsmarine won't be able to gather a large fleet.
In the Pacific though, all sides can only go with "search & destroy". Or am I misunderstanding this?
It was caused by an advantage in intelligence (cracking the Japanese code).
But anyways, in terms of gameplay: When is "patrol" viable in the Pacific Theatre where all sides field large fleets? I see a serious flaw in the system if I understand it correctly. Further more it could be an exploit if the a.i. uses "patrol".
Podcat....we have to work on those jeans. Your killing me. Otherwise thank you for the DD. Glad to see my dreams of seizing Iceland with Germany in order to raid the Atlantic can be fulfilled.
Quick question: Will scout plane ability from capital ships be present in order to increase the range of detection while patrolling or will this just be factored into the view range of the ship?
since the crew does have experience will we be able to give marine units training too?
i remember i saw a documentary some time back and Japan delayed sending out their new carried because their crew, or atleast their aircrew were gonna train some more
will this be simulated in Hoi4 too in some way?
Cheers for the DD, and more excellent design decisions. Hope you had a great holiday as well, glad to hear that Johan exiled you somewhere nice
.
Am particularly excited about the decision to include equipment in convoys (and to keep supplies and resources there, but figured they'd be fairly safe!) - I'm guessing replacement manpower still magically transports as it's a bit too granular to track in the engine? Would be a fan of replacement troops making their way onto convoys as well, but it's not a biggy, and if they don't have supplies/equipment, it's not as if they'll be causing a heap of trouble for whatever theatre they're in, in any event.
A couple of questions if easy to answer and it's not jumping the gun on future DDs/other mechanics:
(1) is there any interplay between naval aircraft missions and spotting enemy vessels. Historically, land-based aircraft were very important for detecting enemy fleets prior to engagements with carrier based aircraft and/or surface vessels (Midway and the Bismarck come to mind, although I'm sure they're not the only examples).
(2) is there any mechanic for fuel/ammo (that green tick next to the shell looks promising....)/duration at sea? This would go some way to modelling navies and the u-boat fleet having to come into port to refuel and refit, regardless of whether they'd seen combat or not, and would make the RN's job when chasing German surface raiders more historically difficult (as they couldn't just swan around in the Atlantic forever), and would also have sensible and hopefully interesting gameplay-wise ramifications for the Pacific, Indian Ocean and Mediterranean theatres as well.
Either way, best of luck to you and the team for ongoing development.

Then you just have to add ships to your sub hunting fleet, that is why this new system is great. The same is true about aircrafts.
On closer attention I noticed the Jap admiral had a max fleet size of 50, so it seems you could have Admirals with 50 submarines in the Atlantic and the game will organise them for you. Good change.
Is this denkt person affiliated with paradox interactive? Because well he is talking very much like he knows the mechanics beyond what was revealed during the dev diaries and I would like to know if I can take that information as actual fact instead of the speculation of another forum go-er.
