..and what the hell is the red camel?

It's the Cammell Laird & Company logo, one of Britain's famous shipyards. I guess it will be one of the "tech teams" that will be in the game, can someone tell what they are going to call companies like Supermarine, Avro, Harland & Wolff nowadays? I'm pretty sure we're no longer calling them as tech teams.

They are now called Designer.

What about subs attacking surface ships? Many powerful (and not so powerful) ships during WW II were sunk by subs, but in HoI 3 a sub sinking a surface ship was extremely rare.

PS. In fact, the number one killer of major ships during WW II were planes, and then subs, other surface ships coming in a poor third position.

the efficiency of the route will go down even if you have spare convoys so the negative effects will apply anyway. THis is one thing that should make it work better than in hoi3

its all regions baby
Can you achieve almost complete shutdown of a trade route? for example:
- UK has lots of convoys and can replace at will
- destination port is however guarded by enemy subs that sink 90% of arriving convoys
- how do you calculate supply lane efficiency: is it 10% (because 10% surviving convoys) or higher because of endless replacements?

are convoys continous or discrete? as in do they arrive one by one so you have to keep constant watch or is it once per month/year etc.?

Cool DD, looking forward to the next one already! Will you have a game day on the 23rd? Know that day is a bit close to Christmas, but was hoping to see more HoI4 before the Christmas evening and before the new year starts to ticks in. :)

Can we not have a joke Christmas DD telling us about how the North Pole is playable? I mean, it would be easy to switch the names and pictures around enough to take fake screenshots.

I would say 10%, because having replacement doesn't change the fact that 90% of your shipped ressources are lost on the ocean bed.

they was also famous camel smokers....
stories tell notches represent crew hitted by cancer not the sub's freighter sunk

@keynes2.0 - you can assign destroyers on an escort mission. are they not then destroyer escorts? I do not understand what you mean when you say there are no destroyer escorts maybe you mean something else.

There were destroyers and smaller destroyers class called destroyer-escorts. Those were specific for escorting conveys, they were smaller and had pretty much only ASW duties. :)

Yeah, the specialized classes which lacked the speed and armament to be part of a battlefleet. The Cannon class for instance only had a 21 knot speed (compared to the 35 knots of the Fletcher), had only 3 inch popguns as main armament and one third the torpedo tubes. But against subs that was enough speed and you didn't need torpedos or main guns, you just needed lots and lots of depth charges and they had 300 of those. Making these low performance craft offered a big cost-savings; the Fletcher needed a powerplant 10 times as powerful as the Cannon class to get that 50% increase in speed so the Castle could use cheaper, civilian quality shipbuilding.

Corvettes and escort-destroyers would offer an interesting strategic wrinkle because they would be really useful against submarines but could neither run from not fight even a light cruiser. So if the German player isn't sending surface raiders out, the British or American player could flood the ocean with these cheap ships which are great against submarines.

Hi everyone, its Friday which means its time for another development diary. This one is all about our underwater friends: The Submarines!

The role of the submarine in Hearts of Iron IV is the same as it was historically: To hunt down enemy shipping and not have to challenge a superior enemy fleet directly to hurt them. Its a particularly attractive choice as Germany who will likely be facing Britain and the massive Royal Navy.

Each nation can research 4 different submarine models, each more powerful and harder to catch.

It is also possible to create variants of these using field experience where you can improve their torpedo attack, stealth or engine speed.

Submarines, like the rest of your ships are affected by doctrines. Here is a screenshot showing the submarine focus branch in the Trade Interdiction doctrine.

It improves the ability of submarines to detect other ships and their organization, but most importantly it improves their coordination while convoy raiding. Whenever a submarine in the fleet detects and enemy convoy this coordination value will control how quickly other submarines can gather and help in the attack (and also get away when cavalry arrives) so it is important for someone focusing on getting the most out of their submarine force.

As mentioned earlier the goal of the submarine is primarily to attack your enemy's economy by preying on convoy routes. For example:
- Attacking convoys along an enemy trade route will deny them foreign resources.
- A nation split across the globe like Britain must convoy home resources to their capital area from many places in its empire to use them, making them vulnerable to submarine raiding.
- When receiving lend lease, convoys carrying equipment can be sunk and will be lost forever.
- When deploying troops on foreign theaters of war a nation must ferry supply and reinforcement equipment to them. By taking out these convoys their troops will be weaker and easier to defeat.
- Troops being transported or during a planned invasion may be attacked leading to them being wiped out or severely weakened. You always want to be very careful and guard your transport routes before sending troops somewhere in war time.

Each convoying route will have a visible efficiency shown in a tooltip indicating on average how much goes through due to attacks and other lack of convoys. Any convoy attacks are shown with indicators on the map that you can check out after battles with a report and will give you a hint on where the enemy is concentrating its raiders. Its advisable to put ships on convoy escort missions to help defend against submarines and other threats.

Most ships are not capable of effective sub hunting, especially not capital ships so having destroyers and light cruisers with a fleet is important for defense and being able to deal with the submarines. Submarines may also be spotted by aircraft so keeping your air superiority in areas will help as well.

In the naval battle above German submarines have managed to sink a large amount of convoys and are about to slip away into the night from the Royal Navy (who have arrived in time to save the last 5). Note that they have an indicator on them that tell you that the enemy does not know their exact location and can't attack them.

This was the last diary before Christmas and we will be returning again after much needed rest with diaries on January 8th!
Thanks Podcat, and merry Christmas!

I see in podcats screenshot there is a "centurion " and "Lion II" battleship. Are they variants? Or superheavy battleships?
