countries can try to intervene and support the side that they want to seize power in the country.
First of all I want to tank you Rufo for a very interesting diary! It is nice to hear from the scripting side in a game development project like this :) I like your style of writing.

A question regarding the above quote: May any nation try to intervene? If not, what does it take to get that opportunity?

It's awesome that Paradox has allowed civil wars to fire for any country rather than just pre-scripted ones. I'm really liking the balance between sand box and historical gameplay in HOI4. Paradox has struggled with this in the past, but I think they may have finally nailed it for this game :).

its a design thing because this is a game. The world is a sandbox for player, but if every AI would use this mechanic there would be no WW2. I can think of a few cases where it may make sense for AI to do it, so we might add it though.

A case of limiting the AI from going crazy with every nation couping each other?

Was glad to hear that the AI can't actively use it. But what if we want to pursue a coup in our own nation? Like the common example is to make a communist USA, could we, if we were the leader of the USA, politically ask the AI to support/fund/stage a coup in our nation? I know that sounds really counter-intuitive the way I say it, perhaps someone could say it better than me! Basically, could we ask AI Russia to funnel money to speed up the coup?

I feel a bit confused now though, are there other external influence factors that raise party popularity that aren't linked to the "stage a coup" action? So the AI can use "support our party" or whatever it was in HoI3? >_>

Yes, this system is nice, but this can be testing ground for future games! More factions than two might not be on the table today, but perhaps for a future Cold War or Victoria III game!

This system looks perfect for the inevitable East vs. Wast DLC ;)

Please no... Cold War needs to be a own game... it don't fit into a war game like HoI... You can't put both into one game well.

Ahhh I remember the joyful times of Hearts of Iron 2, while playing LAN with two other friends (me Germany, the others obviously Italy and Japan). I kept on trying to force USA being on the fascist side when *BAM* coup succeded and suddenly USA became fascist. Needless to say it was instantly game over for the allied forces

First of all, this system looks great. I love how coups require both political power and equipment. I might have to revise my plans for obsolete equipment, actually. I was originally planning to over-train my divisions until the old crap was used up (Lend-Lease is for suckers; let the British arms themselves), but now I'm thinking that if I know I won't be in the war until 1941, it might behoove me to fund freedom-loving revolutionaries around the world while rearming with Shermans and Garands. Sure, I'll burn political power doing it, but seeing freedom spread through India, Singapore, Kenya, Algeria, and Morocco will warm the cockles of my heart. ;)

:sings: America, Hell yeah! Comin' again to save the mother-loving day, yeah! :sings:

Sure that would be the downside, but the potential to have the USA neutralized with internal conflict even for a few years might just be worth the risk if you are Japan or Germany. You might even gain a potential New World ally out of one of the successor states in the process as well.

On a more serious note, let me just say that I had the exact same idea. Case Rattenkrieg might involve funding a huge revolution in the Soviet Union while I work on crushing the French and British. Who cares if Stalin wins? As long as the Soviets are tied down for 24 months without me losing manpower, it might buy me the time I need to defeat the decadent capitalists, securing the west before I start a buildup for the great crusade against the Soviets.

Isnt there a "Sandbox" mode and a "Historic" mode?

Why on earth would you not let the AI use Coups in the "Sandbox" mode?!

Can we at least mod the AI to use Coups if we want?

Two questions:

What happens, if a civil war breaks out in a country which is already at war? Will both factions be at war with the outside opponent, or could one side become even an ally?

Is the chance to trigger a civil war in any way affected by an ongoing war?
