FINALLY! PROOF THAT OHIO ISN'T A LESSER STATE, MY FRIENDS HAVE BEEN WRONG THIS WHOLE TIME!

They just didn't have any other states that were willing to work with you, Ohio. The closest was Michigan agreeing that you could be a second parking lot for their football stadium.

Don't you mean Texas, California, and everything else?

California wasn't a US state until the 60s...

The Unholy Alliance NFs seems to be the exception to the exception as it were. America doesn't really join factions, but it can ally itself with an entire faction even without changing government. At least that seems to be what the 'war plan' branches are suggesting.

I think it work similiar like Soviet Union and the Allies are more like competitors in war against a common foe.

Actually, it was a nacionalistic dictatorship istead of a fascist one. I would hardly consider Vargas's regime a fascist one.

In fact the regime of Getulio Vargas wasn't entirely fascist, but had many affinities with the nazi-Fascist regimes in Europe.
In the case within the Hearts of Iron IV I think the Estado Novo fits more into a fascist government

The Navy is relatively strong, with 3 carriers, 15 battleships, 15 heavy cruisers, 9 light cruisers, 115 destroyers and 77 submarines, but that is just a fraction of the power they will be able to unleash when they have built up.

The airforce is not that big, with less than 900 planes in it, and not yet any B-17’s available .

Ehm WHAT!? How are we going to micromanage those numbers? 900 not a big number? Are we going to have 500000 planes and 100000 destroyers?

BTW I am glad to see the possibility of the US and GB squaring off. I've been kicking around a scenario in my head about American "adventurism" butting heads against British colonialism, and letting the biggest navies of the time square off against each other :)

Would definitely borrow a lot of the thoughts coming out of the Tizard Mission discussion for that as well.

I think it would fit more if the Estado Novo was neutral, but had more authoritarian government form.

Every time I see a new focus tree I get confused. Surely all the options under War Propaganda aren't mutually achievable? It doesn't make sense that you could give UK Destroyers for Bases but also blockade them, then go to war with them? Or do these focus have specific requirements, like negative relations, or being in a state of war?

So USA cannot join the Axis.

Re-read what Johan wrote: "Home of the Free, which allows them to create factions, but not to join any faction led by another ideology"

Emphasis on *ANOTHER* ideology.

The US starts as a Democracy, so it can (World Tension, Laws etc permitting) join a faction led by a Democracy. If it changes to Fascist, it can join a faction led by a Fascist. If it changes to Communist, it can join a faction led by a Communist.

I read that as just no cross-pollinating going on, so you can't join a Fascist-led or Communist-led Faction whilst still a Democracy.

But, if (say) France has formed its "Little Entente" with the Czechs, or a faction with Italy, and is still a Democracy, the US could (World Tension, Laws etc permitting) join the Little Entente or the Franco-Italian Pact.

Well the trend is to want more detailed maps.
In darkest hour we have the darkest hour map, which is fine, but like the hoi4 map, merges some states etc.

We are all busy porting the dh map to the E3 map, which is much more detailed and allows for perfect state borders and lots of the provinces are tiny. It does not affect gameplay at all.

So, I'm intrigued about the merging of states. Why?
Surely computer power is much better and can easily take all those states?
We can do it NOW in darkest hour, (hoi2.... ) so what exactly is the problem. Why merge provinces at all?

Is it possible to mod this map and put back the correct states and borders?

You are conflating the political "states" (i.e. New York, Maine, Rhode Island, etc) with the strategic regions called "states" in HoI4 (i.e. the New England-ish area).
You are also conflating political "provinces" with the tactical regions called "provinces" in HoI4.
podcat has been rather clear in the past the the map divisions are based more on strategic and geographical regions than meaningless internal political lines. Why would Germany care where the UK put the borders of Yorkshire during Sealow?

So I don't understand why there is the soviet emblem on the icons for UK.
I believe it's indicating who you're joining, while the 'Embargo x' indicates who you're putting yourself against. So Unholy Alliance line is join Axis against the USSR, while Anti-Imperialism is join ComIntern against the UK/Commonwealth Realms, and Destroyers for Bases is join the Allies against Germany.

Pearl Harbor Gambit looks to be different, you don't appear to join a faction by taking that path, just steering towards hostilities with Japan.

Not 500 000 planes, but 303,713 for the US during the war. See there: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II_aircraft_production

Read DD#7 about air combat. You will not have to manage every single plane individually, but act at a strategic level.

It would hardly be the "home of the free" if it changes to be fascist or communist, and the National Anthem would be changed. The National Spirit should be removed in that case.

The Great Depression didn't go away in 1940. American free market capitalism had totally failed during this era and nothing worked to fix it. People were literally starving to death and the boom-bust cycle had been a steady 10 years since the foundation of the United States. Hoover's hogs and all that jazz. The US was forced to seek out wars to give their economy a boost, primarily by destroying the industrial base of all their competitors.
