Hello there,

I am planning to buy HOI4 to see if I can drag myself away from EU4, although I am really cheap and poor :D. I see that HOI4 is going out at $39.99 in the US but in the UK it is priced at £34.99 (~$50). Just wondering what accounts for this disparity?

Much love

Well it is 40 euros so that is ~$44.70 so that is still more than the Americans pay. I am not going to assume it is paradox I am just curious if anyone knows why we pay more. I believe there are trade tariffs (~3%) with the US so technically it should be more expensive there? It's digital so it can't be shipping/distribution, maybe taxes. As a poor person I am curious ahah. I think the Australians have it worst though.

Steam DB has a list of all prices.

https://steamdb.info/app/394360/

Euro = Dollar and thus relatively more expensive due to exchange rate is normal, but I really have no clue why its more expensive in Britain and much cheaper in countries like Canada, Norway and New Zealand. Not exactly the most poor ones.

Holy hell I didn't realise it is currently the most expensive in the UK. Obviously I am still going to buy it because I am a dork but I just wish I wouldn't cry a little every time DLC comes out for EU4 et al and us poor little UK folk have to pay more than others.

I guess we in the UK just have to settle with being the greatest nation on Earth, USA! USA! USA!

Its probably cheaper in Norway due to us not being part of EU.
Feel free to correct my assumptions.

I guess maybe I just dont get an inside joke... but this seems to be the most perplexing statement I'v seen on the forums all day lol

Anyways, countries with strong middle class will always be charged the most for entertainment. But look at it on the bright side, you probably aren't standing in line waiting for government cheese either ;)

Please remember that here in the UK, we are subject to 20% VAT, which is included in the base cost.

Tho, accounting for exchange from USD to GBP, and applying VAT, we still get screwed out of about £3

Anyway, I'm gonna get it from GMG with that sweet sweet discount

Its probably cheaper in Norway due to us not being part of EU.
That doesn't matter at all, it's that you're not part of the Euro. All video games receive pricing in dollars and are then sold at the same amount but then in euros, and at the same time, other countries such as Russia have the reverse situation, that's also why there's geolock on games, coz otherwise everyone'd by their version in Russia as it means paying 40$ less (in the UK case)...

Thanks, I wasn't sure how all that worked. I'm pretty happy with the pricing as its cheaper for me to just buy it directly thru steam.

UK is the land were everything is more expensive than EC. We should legally be able to buy fags and booze at euro land prices instead tax man will arrest you for carrying out your european rights.Buy beer in France pay tax ,come into UK they force you to pay an illegal tax on your beer or they force you to pore it away

It's based on consumer willingness to pay. So for example Canadians see American prices when they cross the border and convert 1:1 in their heads. So when things are higher and reflect the 30% lower value of Canadian currency Canadians are less likely to buy feeling it's "overpriced."

However things are typically slightly higher than 1:1 and when our dollar jumps the American dollar (between 2008-2014 for example) Canadians get screwed and pay much more.

Anyway overall they'll charge whatever they think they can get away from. No idea if it's Paradox or steam though.

It's based on consumer willingness to pay. So for example Canadians see American prices when they cross the border and convert 1:1 in their heads. So when things are higher and reflect the 30% lower value of Canadian currency Canadians are less likely to buy feeling it's "overpriced."...

I paid a premium of 20% when the US price was charged in CAN $. But as I got a 20% rebate from MacgameStore the final price was 38,99 CAN$.
