That kind of special skill set won't really be required, as people with that kind of experience are already on the paradox team testing the game as they go along.

It would appear not nearly as many as necessary to meet deadlines. Furthermore, when you get down to it, they're handing out 10 and only 10 betas for the entire world which is silly. And furthermore, you actually have to go out and do the advertising for them to be in the consideration. So whether you want to admit it or not, they're asking for work. No. They are insisting on it. And the work isn't REALLY the work you'd want from a TRUE beta tester. Go refer 20 people. It's advertising. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Most will get the 20 referrals and get absolutely nothing in exchange. And that's just ridiculous, and ultimately offensive to me.

As far as I am aware the main reason for the delays was not because of how unstable and not because of game breaking bugs in the game but that they wanted extra time to reapproach things such as the national focusses and battle planner. Secondly the marketing side of things is just a side note. I imagine (based on my understanding of their practice) most of the testers will come from people who have already proven themselves worthy beta testers and from those they see fit from applications and after that, they said they will do the lottery for the marketing side of the beta. So it's a side note for them that gets them a little publicity and a second chance for anyone who doesn't object to it and wants in.

Well now you're just misinformed. The refer 20 people for beta thing is not even related to this. This closed beta application is completely separate, you apply, paradox checks your application, and if they like it, you're in. Or something similiar. The refer 20 people thing has absolutely nothing to do with this process. It's completly unrelated, it's just a promotional thing. Hell, you could theoretically refer 20 people and sign up for this application and get to play beta twice! And the delay also has nothing to do with bugs and such, it was delayed most likely because the devs were unsatisfied with current features and had to start from scratch on some of them.

They could probably get people to pay them to be a Beta tester if they wanted. Not that I think they would ever do that though.

Ah, I thought they had four full time QA people whose primary task was alpha/beta testing. I hear they're paid fairly low wages...by Swedish standards anyway. If only I had studied coding in school, maybe I could have been Swedish poor instead of American poor...

If they expect a mere gamer's POV, then that's fine. But some of us have degrees in computer science and experience in gaming that goes back to the VIC 20 and Commodore 64. I think THAT kind of special skillset should be given a complimentary steam key. Afterall, work is being done.

I've been in a few betas (none Paradox, mind) and the only one that came with a free anything was the PSN network beta on PS2 - where I'm pretty sure we all got a free copy of SOCOM with it (great game too it was) - and that was a pretty unique circumstance, as we were beta-ing the network, rather than a game, per se (in fact, I think the beta came with a free network adaptor for the PS2 as well, if I recall correctly, noting it was 13 years ago, so there's more than a small chance I'm not!) I haven't heard of other betas giving out free keys either. And, it's not like Paradox has any supply issues when it comes to beta testers, and it's not like the vast majority of beta testers wouldn't be very happy doing it for nothing, so I'd be surprised if it was anything other than the 'standard' approach to beta testing.

A lot of new faces here! Welcome to Paradox, hopefully you will be happy with the community and perhaps also enter the beta. Personally, I wish I would had been able to participate, but I lack the time to do so. I'm not woried though, with this response I'm sure HoI4 beta testing will be really efficient.

Or the revenue from Cities skylines was bigger than expected and they decided to make HOI4 better now that they had the money for it. An investment.
