Great expansion... really enjoying it. The only suggestions for the patch would be to make dominions less frequent, and when you release a dominion it has your own primary culture as their primary culture (first class). Great expansion, nevertheless! I love the new colonial system... I actually had to fight for colonies instead of the boring conquest of all of Africa. Overall, very pleased :)

If before pressing reforms as absolute monarchy was an extremely hard task, now it's almost impossible. Russia is close to unplayable right now as rebellions became more numerous and now you have to kill EVERY single rebel brigade in each of your 500+ provinces...and as autohunt rebels now go siuciding vs 35k rebel stacks you have to kill all this hundreds of brigades manually.
What are you doing to your pops? O_O
I played Russia like ten times and never ever had any large scale revolt that got out of hand.

Anyway, have you tried increasing your stack size a bit? Once you can comfortly support 30k stacks in your provinces these are more then adequate for rebel hunting.

So far I'm very disappointed with the "one port per state rule". The main reasons are:
1) Ports construction used to be a powerful "Keynesian" tool to drive demand in the early game.
2) The player can no longer be relaxed regarding its navy's size (and therefore costs) because of much less ports to build ships than before. In the old days I could go "the brits have 30 Ironclads more than me? I'll build 40 then!".
2.1) I think the rule preventing me to build large ships outside my Capital's range by land connection is also not a good idea, but I haven't reached far enough into the game to be certain.
3) I think it actually penalises small countries in multiplayer.
(1) The price for ports does significantly increase with higher level. In addition, that early demand was actually partially bad because the game lacks upkeep costs - once these buildings are completed, all the "fake" industry demand is gone and you are left with economicially unfeasible factories once the project is completed.
(2) It does indeed hurt to lose your ships, but late game times from high level ports + techs are not too bad. At the very least it gives an additional incensive to research naval techs - a tree that is often very low priority...
(3) It does indeed. But not to the extend like the naval support limit in EU3 made Netherlands or Sweden almost impossible to compete with other nations before DW came out. However, I guess it might be possible to mod the game and add supply limit to techs to balance out the issue. In addition, the new naval combat system should favor quality over quantity, so tech advantage can be quite important (and SWE has indeed way more RP than ENG).

I'm curious as to whether the crisis system can be used to create cultural unions without actually being the union country. For example can you use them to form italy as sardinia piedmont or germany as prussia etc. or does it only really come into play when you are taking back your cores from austria/france later on.

While everyone is enjoying the world turning into a patchwork of dominions, and I wait for a patch and a sale, may I just ask... Are there any notable changes to migration? How do protectorates and colonies get staffed?
I don't see anyone migrating to any of my colonies. USA are however getting A LOT of migrants.
Kind of hard to make a conclusion with just this one game, but that's my current situation (and this is a thread for first impressions).

Nobody says that HoD is horrible.
But it has huge problem for people who like history.
And all this 'dominion mess' was anticipated at least last week (just from AARs, I don't know about betatesters). There was much arguing about it. I really don't understand why they don't make dominions moddable.
So there will be no problem at all.

I study it, so I reckon I have at least a minimum of interest, and Victoria 2 was never THAT historically accurate to begin with. I agree with you in that these dominions are a little over the top, but at the end of the day it is a good expansion. There is no denying that, and I was just trying to put a possible buyer's doubts to rest.

This is happening to me as well. Playing France in 1836 budget says I should be losing like 2000 while the budget window in the main screen says I'm
gaining around 200, which is indeed what seems to be happening. What's going on here?

Is anyone else getting a weird issue with their budget?
Playing as Romania the budget screen says I should be losing ~$100. But up in the top box I am actually in the green. If I hover my mouse over the green income figure and get the budget breakdown, it says the expected income if minus ~$100. But the money keeps on coming in.

Ok, I get it now. Please disregard my previous query.


The budget screen shows a minus because you have some queued stockpile purchases for constructions which aren't really purchased as there is no supply for them. The top income shows a plus because you aren't really purchasing them (as there is no supply of goods). So the budget screen shown an estimate if every good was available on the market while the top bar shows your real money balance in the last day.

This one was answered somewhere above:
The projected balance is calculated for buying all goods needed to construct units, buildings and factories, while the main budged window shows the ACTUAL budged.
So in short you do not lose money because you cannot buy all the goods you would need to build your stuff.

It is extremely annoying to see the UK release Canada, Australia, New Zealand, British Columbia, and Newfoundland within the first year. Even worse is when it colonises the interior of Australia and the other parts of Canada and New Zealand and makes the map really ugly.


I do think the AI should want to release dominions, but I think this is too much.

I am actually looking forward more to the Pop Demand Mod being updated than anything else right now.

Do the devs and betas see these sorts of problems early on, or do they somehow miss them? Assuming they do see these problems, I wonder what the thought process is when addressing them or not addressing them before release.

Sometimes bugs are known but other bugs (that do things like crash the game or totally unbalance it) are higher-priority.

I'm just generally intrigued by the logistics of dealing with these matters. For example, is it a triage thing, where they deal with high priority problems first (crashes and such) and deal with relatively low-level problems afterward? Or is it a matter of 'we need more data points to see if its a recurring problem?' Or something else? Just looking to dig around inside their heads.

I'm just generally intrigued by the logistics of dealing with these matters. For example, is it a triage thing, where they deal with high priority problems first (crashes and such) and deal with relatively low-level problems afterward? Or is it a matter of 'we need more data points to see if its a recurring problem?' Or something else? Just looking to dig around inside their heads.

So far I'm very disappointed with the "one port per state rule". The main reasons are:
1) Ports construction used to be a powerful "Keynesian" tool to drive demand in the early game.
2) The player can no longer be relaxed regarding its navy's size (and therefore costs) because of much less ports to build ships than before. In the old days I could go "the brits have 30 Ironclads more than me? I'll build 40 then!".
2.1) I think the rule preventing me to build large ships outside my Capital's range by land connection is also not a good idea, but I haven't reached far enough into the game to be certain.
3) I think it actually penalises small countries in multiplayer.
This system is more realistic, this is good

2. If the dominion country has cores, you need all of them.
So if Britain fires the Webster-Ashburton-Treaty and gives the USA their province in New England, it will never be able to release Canada?
Or if the US captures any other canadian province?

I was afraid of stuff like this happening. Dominions are great but they don't make much sense for many places outside of Canada, South Africa, & Australia. Especially early on. Maybe there should at least be a tech requirement for it?

Rather than a "real" dominion (Canada, NZ, Australia, South Africa) needing every core to be released (which wouldn't make sense if say the USA grabs one state in Canada), I think it should be that every one of their cores has to be COLONISED before they can be released. Therefore, Australia couldn't be released without it all being colonised first, but were the USA to grab one Canadian province... Britain could still release the rest of Canada AFTER it's all been colonised by them/US.

Also, requiring whole states as a minimum to become a dominion. To stop the Portuguese Goa -> India thing.

A tech before dominions can be created would also be preferable, but if the UK is creating them due to disbanding its navy at the start... maybe it's the British budget that needs rebalancing? Possibly the same with Portugal too?
