Blizzard have been dragging out development times for years longer than Valve. Half-Life wasn't even released until 98. Now that they're 15 years ago 94 and 98 kind of run together but Blizzard had a reputation first. Half-Life 2 wasn't even announced until 2003 and the delays began.

Oh the Delays started way earlier, Half-Life was almost a different game when it was first announced, which was some point in the mid 90s that the Internet can't seem to inform me of. But the first real delay was probably Team Fortress, which was announced in 1998 and then realeased in 2007. I honestly can't remember how long Diablo or Diablo II took to develop, just that I bought Diablo when it came out in 1996.

Anyway, go newspapers! I keep loading up countries just to see what they're called.

What about rpaint and cpaint?

they only work in internal debug builds. its a way of painting the map to specify regions etc.

In what file are all the colonial point variables found? Also, can you increase the number of points needed for various levels of colonial investment?

defines.lua has all the values for that. look for stuff starting with COLONIZATION_

Who cares about the newspaper? Fix the late game army and navy balance problems!

Was looking at that, but I'm not sure what the specific lines do...

For example, what is the difference between colonization interest and colonization influence? And is there a way for different levels to cost different amounts? For example, having the initial settlements still cost the normal 20, but having the outposts cost 40 (or, even better, each successive outpost costing more than the previous)?

I mean I haven't usually been this anxious about a patch or kept begging for it to be released already, but the game's kind of unplayable as it is, and it's not nice to buy a game and have to wait for weeks for it to get patched...

That's usually the reason you shouldn't buy any PI title on day 0 unless you do it solely to support them. I've NEVER played a PI product (games, expansions) on day 0 that'd be perfectly playable (minor/annoying bugs don't count, gamebreaking/major ones do), they always need atleast one patch to be playable, that's the sad truth. But from the other side, it makes sense, since after release there's thousands of people playing it, while the testing period probably has something around a hundred (probably less, I'm just 100% guessing), it could be fixed by simply getting an open beta for those who pre-order (if there's such an option) and making clear disclaimers that the game may still be incomplete, that way some more bugs could be fixed before they call it a finished game and release it to their customers as something they spent 30 pounds on.

you shouldn't buy any PI title on day 0

There's a massive disadvantage to that. When you do that, you lose the chance to impact the shape of the patch with your own comments, opinions, bug reports. You haven't seen the game yet, so you have nothing to add other than repeating what others wrote already. And that means it's the opinion of others that matters for PDS when making the patch. When you finally buy it, you'll be late to the party as far as impacting the shape of the game goes.

Since PDS actually pay attention to this forum, unlike other companies - I'd rather buy it early, play it a 100h, see what's broken the most and post a rant about it (with attached savegames:p) so PDS can do something about the issues I consider the most important, rather then sit tight for a month or two (however long till the patches come out) and hope others figure it out for me.

Been on a few open betas in my life. I can only imagine what a bunch of amateur, lazy, entitled and useless (and then MIA) betas those guys who bought themselves early access with $$$ would be.

I have mixed feelings about pre-ordered open betas. I'm not going to say it never does well because sometimes it does, but I think that sometimes it makes the development get a bit too lazy because they suddenly realized that everyone who will probably buy the game already did. Then the actual "release" comes, and the game doesn't really look much different.

I guess it comes down to some developers are good, and some suck, and it's a wide range. Pre-order beta is not some magic bullet.

Why would you want to pay to be a beta, if you can be one for free. Just apply at the right time and hope to be picked from the crowd.
