This was just a thought I had on how to add some external inspiration to the alien design process.
I was thinking that some of the alien DLC created in the future, you could hire a well-known guest artist or writer to offer some basic visual or text-based designs to the art team to add them in.
For instance, consulting Greg Bear or Larry Niven & asking them if they could help with some alien designs for some future DLC. Then you sell for instance, Larry Niven's Aliens DLC or something like that. It wouldn't have to be a science fiction writer, could be an artist, or a freelance, well-known video game designer.
Another one might be crossing over with another video game franchise. For instance, I recall one defense-type game that included a Portal DLC (though the game was not designed by Valve). So aliens from some other video game could be given the 3D treatment in its own DLC & added in to Stellaris (to conquer or be conquered).
Just food for thought.
